What are you all using out in the ocean?

I'm new to kayak fishing, but off a friend's boat I'm digging the Pitbull Tackle Bora Jigs, Deadfall jigs, and swim baits (for wings).

Rockfish rig, two dropper hooks with purple squid plastics on them, tipped with a chunk of squid bait, sinker on bottom.
Warning! Retiree; Knows it all and has plenty of time to tell you about it.

Yeah, usually lings and Rf bite whatever.  If you are scared of not catching fish, I'm pretty sure I've never skunked with a white farralon feather shrimp fly.  Besides that...jigs, swimbaits, flies, irons, bare hooks with a hunk of bait, etc. all work.  Add some squid to a jig and you'll usually catch more.  Bigger lure can sometimes weed out some smaller fish, but a small RF occasionally hits a lure it's own size.

Gulp 6 inch or 5 inch grub or 5 or 6 inch swimbait. If the drift is too fast I’ll use a metal jig.

Thanks, everyone. I'll just bring what I got and not sweat it. I like the idea of some Farallon Feathers with some squid on the hook.  See you all out there.

Zoom. Although I’ve fished with other folks who use other things and we all get good results. So I wouldn’t say it outperforms anything else.

The nice thing about those is that you just put them on a big hook, and that’s it. When fishing, simply connect the eye of the hook to the angler clip at the end of your leader. Connect a 3 or 4oz torpedo sinker to your sliding sinker rig. It’s a very versatile setup.
When this rig drops, the sinker will hit the rocks first, giving you a few seconds to pull the rod up before the bait hits the bottom, which can reduce snagging.

Thanks. I have yet to use a torpedo sinker. I see they are the go-to for a lot of people. I'll look into why that is.

I use saltiga sk jigs. Lately I've been using some slow pitch rods and it makes the fishing experience a blast. The sk jigs tend to catch the large fish variety and are pretty deadly. The pink glow is the one I go for mainly although I have lots of other colors. They work so well, I've given up on using bait unless it's live.
The only drawback is that you have to constantly jig for the fish. But it's a blast jigging and then feeling that fish bite and tug during the rise/fall.

I'm hooked on the slow pitch. My noodles arms can only jig for so long though, so the jigging is usually broken up by drifting some bait so I can take a break ha

The streamlined shape of a torpedo slides over soft bottom and tends to get hung up less (or pop out easier) when fishing over rocky structure.  Round sinker tend to stick in soft bottom and can easily wedge between rocks.

The only time I use a ball is salmon trolling, you’re generally up in the water column away from structure and the round shape has, IMO, a wobble to it that adds a little more action to a straight bait.

Some where deep in the bowels of NCKA is an image of one of our members (Can't recall the name) of using a Barbie Doll to catch a Ling. His point was Lings will eat anything.

Do you attach hooks on the top or bottom of your Daiwa Saltiga SK Jig?
