I'm afraid you may miss my smack talk this year....

I am having trouble getting organized with new work.

I'm bummed.  I should have checked in earlier, but I am so swamped with the new job that it has been tough.

Ah well....

I have a few quick related questions about the specifics on the 8 oz fly bonus?

If I'm alternating between my fly rod and a conventional rod and happen to catch a striper on the fly rod, does that count?  Or is it 8 oz if you're only using flies for the whole tourney?
What if I fish a fly with a spinning rod by say using a bobber?
What if I troll a fly with the fly rod?
Do flies have to be made of feathers and hair?  What if I cast a very small zoom type lure with the fly rod?

Thanks,
Brian

Splitting the hairs of the fly...

If its a tiny plastic...well that is a tiny plastic...not a fly.  Tying it to a fly rod doesn't make it a fly.  Yes, I know, I know.  We've all seen them, but they are not flies, at least  not for this event.  Flies with synthetic components like a mylar shad are fine.

On the less strict side, I could care less how you present a REAL fly.  On the troll, on the bobber, on the spinner...go crazy.

You can switch between angling types.  I WILL be watching with BIG binos. Cheaters will win a one week trip to a remote cabin with Skygreen.  :spank

Not to get this all up in a fuss but I think that the bonus 8 oz for flies should only go to those on a flyrod. There's a ton of minuses that fly fishers need to get over so IMO that 8 oz bonus is just leveling the playing field a little. For example, FF's can't cast as often, (can't cast as far and as deep as efficiently) don't have any gearing (gear ratios) and some don't even have a real drag system at all. Then you get into having to hold on to a slippery line while a striper goes berserk on the other end. With those minuses a FF's landing ratio is going to be much slimmer than the conventional gear user. I think we can all agree on that.

If you use a fly on conventional gear you're jut using a different lure. Why should you get a bonus for that? If you're a conventional gear user and really want that bonus, just C&R it and there ya go.

SCWA has made the rules and I'll abide by them but just my 2 cents.

Thanks for the clarification Sean.

That's more or less what I thought, but wanted to double check.  I'd hate to loose a second buckle to technicality.

Zee-In my heart I agree, and those that choose to use a fly in an undignified way will have to endure the shame of doing so in an attempt to win on a technicality.

But also keep in mind that people that use a fly under a bubble won't have the efficiency or effectiveness of a Zoom on a jig head.  Mr Zoom  can choose C&R, and in all likelihood weigh more fish and have a better chance of high-grading.

Will 8 ozs of fly under a bubble be worth the price of enhanced high grading??? The possibilities are what make it so interesting.  Mostly, I was just trying to get us all out of our Mendo bait-dragging rut, and put a little creativity back into it.  I know I have few new tricks in the Plano.

Hey Sean -

I sometimes scent my streamers with powerbait worms. Is that OK? I can use liquid scent if it is not allowed. Also, is it allowed to fish 2 lures on one rod, like a hopper & dropper combo? Personally, I think flies should be presented with a fly rod and line to qualify. The only reason to handicap flies is that it requires more skill to present properly. Earlier this year, SurfingMarmot outfished everyone (except for the guy using live bait) using flies on the forebay so I don't think flies are inferior to plastics or other artificials. Dragging a fly behind a bobber kind of defeats the whole purpose of the fly handicap, IMO. Not to say that I am a fly fishing snob, because I am not and cast nymphs on bobbers from time to time.  :smt003

Power worms would not be a fly in my book.  Scent is fine in all categories.

Like you said, the whole trick is presenting it properly.  Getting the same presentation with a bobber isn't possible.  I think the right fly on the right fly line is much more effective than a fly on a bobber.

I have seen some of the skilled fly anglers on this forum in action and they really don't need ANY handicapping.  I have seen Mako and Pelican murder them on the fly at Mendo.  A free 1/2 pound in a cookie cutter lake like Mendo is meaningful.

I would say more, but I don't want to reveal some of the advantages a real fly guy can have over the psuedo-fly.  But like you said...marmot outfished everyone.  It can be done.

I think everyone should start to accept the fact that VERY few fish will be caught under these guidelines and that the "details" won't matter much...UNLESS we are blessed with many boils that are not shut down by over anxious paddlers.
