Fishmas

It’s an annual event so popular, anglers describe the opening of trout season in Mono and Inyo counties as Fishmas. The 2021 opener is especially anticipated because the pandemic prevented the 2020 version from happening.

CDFW wants to share key pieces of information about this weekend’s trout opener as thousands of visitors head to communities like Bridgeport, June Lake, Bishop and Mammoth for some of the best fishing in the world.

First, though the Fishmas season runs from the last Saturday in April through November 15, there are shorter fishing periods for inlets at Crowley Lake, and Rush Creek between Silver and Grant lakes.

Because those streams are so significant for spawning, the season is late May through September 30. These new regulations are part of a statewide regulation simplification process. Please be aware that the regulations may have changed at your favorite spot or lake.

Second, because of hatchery issues, stocking for 2021 is well below the usual levels.

Third, be aware some spots, like Virginia Lakes, South Lake and Sabrina Lake, and Rock Creek Lake are still frozen. Please use your best judgment when venturing onto ice.

Finally, though Fishmas is happening and resorts are open – many COVID-19 protocols remain in effect. Please wear a mask and follow physical distancing guidelines.
