Hi all!  I’m still relatively new to all this. I’ve been fishing from my kayak with my old surf casting rod which seems less than optimal. Can anyone suggest a moderately priced rod and reel setup?
Thanks!

What/Where/How?

Are you ocean fishing or freshwater?
What are you fishing for?

Yeah, I should’ve included that. Ocean fishing. My local beach has a rocky cove so I do short casts into the rocks but hoping to figure out where the reefs are and do some jigging. Also hoping to fish the bay for halibut and try for salmon at Stinson Beach this summer. That might be too much for one rod, but hoping to find something versatile. My spinning reel I’m using now has to be cleaned and oiled after every use or it locks up. Do the newer bait casting reels require the same?

I thought that might be the case... I am a newbie to this kayak thing but have done a ton of reading and research. Unfortunately, all my research & fishing experience has been on lake and inland stuff. I will leave this to others better informed here. Wish you good luck tho!

An inexpensive spinning rod and reel combo for our local area is a 20-30# Med, Med fast action rod with a matched reel, probably a 400 size reel.

Maybe a Shakespeare 2201 and a Shimano Sahara 400, about $200 with line.

That’s a pretty wide range of targets from jigging rock fish, halibut, to salmon and you’ll find lots of opinions on the matter. When I first started, I had a 10-25# ugly stick, and a $60 penn levelwind w 30# braid and it got me through a lot of days fishing for lings, butts, chrome, and other interesting species. Before spending too much money, you could probably get by w something similar. Plenty of time to burn cash on specialized equipment once the addiction really sets in lol. One thing to keep in mind, a shorter rod will be easier to net/gaff fish vs a longer rod, especially those rods with faster action and/or more power. You can get by w a longer moderate action rod, but now you’re starting to specialize....ahh f it. Just get whatever you think looks good and fish the hell out of it!  See you otw.

You might wanna consider biting the bullet a little bit and springing for the Shimano Trevala 7' ML. (Everyone here is prob rolling their eyes cause this horse has been beaten to death). Haven't yet found a rod as versatile as that one. I find myself going to it even after having bought other fancier rods. It's meant for jigging but it's got the backbone to troll from a kayak, and still sensitive enough for everything to be fun. Have fun!

I have used a Trevala7’ M with a Tekota 500 LC for the bay and ocean from party boats, and now my kayak. I did get a longer Lamiglass slow action for salmon.

Trevala is no longer produced, gone vintage.

I just checked with the owner of Bay Tackle and he said he thinks they are still making them because he just received an order, and heard anything about them being discontinued. They had plenty in stock when I was there about a week ago.

Oh good, tackle shop owner I know mentioned this non-truth.  I stand corrected.   Go Shimano! :smt006
