Is it possible to safely kayak in the ocean in the late afternoon/evenings?

I had a really bad experience with the current on one of my first trips out on the ocean a year ago (before I had any idea what I was doing), so I've been really cautious ever since and always come in before the afternoon winds really start blowing.

However, I get off work relatively early and it would be great if I could find a way/place to launch in the afternoons (wind/weather permitting). Do any of you get out there late in the day as the sunsets get later? Is that do-able safely or should I not even think about it?

My original disaster was solo on a really heavy tandem freshwater paddle kayak. I now have a Hobie Passport and a bit more confidence, but I'm still definitely a bit gunshy when I go out.

If it is a possibility, any suggestions as to where to launch within an hour of san jose?

Thanks in advance ya'll!

You just have to pick the right wind and wave predictions, Windy .com  I been out a few times in Santa Cruz.   It's a rare day when the ocean lays down in the afternoon but it does happen.

Just come over to SC Harbor on a weekday afternoon
Not Wednesday tho, that's when the Sailboaters "Race"
The wind often lays down late in the evening, could even catch an awesome Sunset

Yes, but it is much easier to launch from a boat ramp during the night.
I do frequently during the lobster season in Southern California.  Launch around 4 PM and return around 8 or 9 PM.
Make sure you carry required lights and safety gear per the night boating regulations.

Surf landing in twilight fog is quite the experience!  I suggest removing and stowing the reels, placing equipment (SS, drive, rods, etc) and fish in a secure location, clear the gunnels for possible bail out, say a quick prayer, and hammer it in as fast as possible!  Timing the sets when the sun is down is pretty difficult and not for the faint of heart.  Cant wait for summer!

Depends.  My gut tells me u shldn't try a surf launch landing at night.  Its scary enuf during day.  Then u reduce or elimin8 ambient illumination, throw in :surf  = no bueno.  All it would take is one yard sale and ur f'd up pretty good.

if you go, hit the harbors for launch/landing.  Yes, its longer paddle, but the bennies far outweigh the costs

Agree with most, hit the harbor. Also be aware that currents are not the only danger of being on the water as the sunsets in SC. Ideal hunting conditions for the tax man...  :smt009

Also love afternoon launches...can't beat the sunset and the bite can be great. Like others said, do it when the conditions are right and you're near a harbor.
