Great hookup with MBYakker/Chris today.  We met at my place before sunrise and headed out to the Cape in my truck.  The forecast of 5-10 knot NW winds was about as high as you can push it for out there.  We passed by Bear River and saw a ripple on the water - not a good sign as it's usually glassy...  We came down the hill at the Cape and saw that the wind was blowing, but not too bad.  We geared up and headed out to the reef.  Chris picked up a fat greenling on the first drop and it was a pretty steady bite from there.  I used a new 4.5 oz. lavender Megabait - real pretty!  The lings liked it as I caught and released two 8-10 pounders pretty early.  I lost the new Megabait to a reef bite and used a swim bait and then a split tail for the rest of the time.  Went on to catch 2 more nice lings including one a bit over 37", 2 blacks, 2 reds (including a 23"er), and a 16" cab (AOTY points!  Hooray!).  I kept the 2 blacks including a bomber 19.5"er.  Chris caught several lings, a nice red, and an assortment of other rockies.  The wind picked up while we fished, but it was always quite negotiable, and it was nice to hang with Chris, who's very comfortable and able in the water.  We headed in around 10 and saw that Greg, my buddy from out there, was hanging out thinking about launching.  He scratched the plan as the wind had come up and wasn't going back down.  Chris and I headed back over the hill and filleted the fish in my yard - 75 degrees and a cold Sierra.  It was a good day.   :smt001

Yeah - it was a bit windy out there but overall very fishable.  The drift was a bit fast and my hairstyle suffered greatly but I managed to catch a few fish.  One of the things I noticed right away about this spot was that the overall quality of fish is outstanding.  The average size rockfish was pretty big and there was a really nice variety of fish.  I didn't keep count but I caught black and yellow, greenling, black, blue, copper (not really sure) . .and to top it off 3 nice lings, too!  At one point I had a school of black rockfish directly under my boat thrashing at my swimbait which is something I am pretty used to with blue rockfish . .but this was cooler because blacks are bigger!

This spot reminded me a lot of my favorite spots on the Central Coast - isolated, rugged and fishy!  The lack of kelp was a major difference but Abking was nice enough to show me where a killer reef is . . .in the future I think I will be installing my fish-finder because I would've had a tough time probably just drifting over random water.

Thanks Abking for showing me the spot and how to fish it . .and for the fillet lesson.  I'm looking forward to getting a few more trips in together this season.

Ya - I've been up here since July.  With any luck I'll be up here through steelhead season and then moving back South - not sure where yet . . possibly Monterey or elsewhere in CA.  It's a hike and a half to get up here . . but the fishing is The Bomb . .so make sure and come visit!

One cool thing about NCKA is that we are all brothers. That is just how we roll.
Gotta be able to take it as well as dish it.  :smt044
