Caspar Cove, Aug 5

Hello All,

This is Nawm, formerly known as Norm from Windsor.  I had trouble logging in some time ago and was never able to get logged back in using my old info and passwords, despite multiple attemts to get it done and requests for help.  Anyway, I was wondering what was happening in the NCKA world, so I decided to just create a new profile.

I have been fishing pretty consistently and have hit the rockfish several times since the opener, as well as done a few dives for the big snails.  My most recent outing was last weekend up at Caspar Cove.  Typical good ling fishing just south of the cove.  I found a great long finger that extends out several hundred yards with the top being 30 to 40 feet and breaking into 80 to 90 feet on both sides.  Didn't fish long, made three casts with a big 7 inch Fishtrap on that high spot for three keeper lings, the biggest being about 15 lbs.  Kept two and paddled in. 

I've been in touch with Ron, and will post up when I am headed up there again, hopefully in the next few weeks.  Or we could always do another Fort Ross trip Ron, if you prefer.

Is Caspar Cove near Fort Bragg?

Super nice! I have ling envy! Caspar can be nice and it's always an easy launch.

Ken......It's between Fort Bragg and Mendocino. Half County beach and half State Beach. It's got a nice campground too!

For those of you who are not familiar with the area just be careful going too far south of the cove because the Point Cabrillo State Marine Conservation Area is right the corner from the Casper Cove with a distance of 1000 feet offshore.

Here is the Info from DFG.
Point Cabrillo State Marine Conservation area. This area is bounded by the mean high tide line, a distance of 1000 feet offshore, and the following points:
39° 21.24’ N. lat. 123° 49.25’ W. long.;
39° 21.33’ N. lat. 123° 49.64’ W. long.;
39° 20.66’ N. lat. 123° 49.68’ W. long.; and
39° 20.57’ N. lat. 123° 49.27’ W. long.

ALL SPECIES PROHIBITED FOR RECREATIONAL TAKE!

Just thought I would give those of you unfamiliar with the area a heads up if you decide to fish there.

Nice fish.  Did you stay at the campground at Caspar?  If so, how was it?

Good point about the Marine reserve, you do have to be careful not to go too far down, luckily good fishing well before that area.

I did not stay over, it is only just under 2 hours from my house to there, so I normally just go up in the morning.  My wife walked the campground though and said they were decent.

last year were you using a megabait with the hooks on the nose? you cast up-drift?

you work your swimbait similarly?

Vic and I and the kids have camped at Caspar many times and love it.  I will add that we have a 5th wheel - so I cannot speak for tent camping.  The facilities are great and with the easy stroll to the beach and great fishing grounds - one could not ask for better.

I still use the megabait with the two Gamakatsu hooks dangling when doing the drift type fishing and managed a few random rockfish doing that at Caspar last time out.  I've started playing with the longer skinnier(8 or 10 inches) Benthos jigs that have a similar finish to the megabaits, but are more durable.  I found them at Sports Authority in Santa Rosa for about 7 or 8 bucks each, and they come pre-rigged with a hanging hook set up from the top eye. 

With the swimbaits, I find it better to fish when the drift is not too fast.  I typically like to make long casts parallel to the structure, in the case of this last trip, a long slowly tapering point, let it sink to the bottom and then do a series of 10 or 12 slow cranks followed by a freespool trip back to the bottom.  I just keep repeating that until it gets vertical and then make another cast.  If I can get away with it, wind and current permitting, i like to use a 2 oz head, but will go bigger if need be.  I find that at least half of the bites come on the freespool drop back to the bottom so you have to keep an eye on the line as it sinks and if it jumps or ticks, put the reel in gear, wind up and swing....  When fishing without the fishfinder, this is a nice technique to use around boiler rocks and edges of kelp beds as well.  It coveres a lot of water and typically weeds out at least some of the smaller bites when using the larger swimbaits.

Sayak, thanks for the info.  Romi and I were through there last week on our usual visit to Pt. Cabrillo.  We were PBing out of Noyo with friends and staying at Pomo in the RV; have never stayed at Caspar, but we have eyeballed it a few times.  Looks good; we'll give it a try.
