Well this weekend was my last for crabbing from the public areas. Has 2 traps stolen. Seems like every time we head over to Eureka area the weather/conditions are not good for kayaking the ocean. Seems like the bay may be a good alternative, weather permitting of course.
Anyone have any tips or general locations crabbing may be productive?
Thinking about out behind the Bayshore mall, since we stay near there it would be ideal. Thanks.

Sorry to hear you lost the traps.  Where did you set them, when did you set them, and how long did you leave them before checking?  Any markings on the buoy other than GOID?

I’ll keep an eye out.

They were on the Trinidad pier. Checked a few times daily. Was my fault for leaving them. Lessons learned I guess.

Sounds good. We are rookies as far as kayaking in the salt. We do have necessary gear. Looks like hopefully Jan 16/17 we will be back over there.

Sorry to hear.  Someone likely watched you check the pots, then watched you drive away, and took the opportunity to steal them.  It can be a rough crowd there sometimes.  We get pots poached out in the water in Trinidad too.  Someday, somebody will catch someone doing it.

There is a pier camera at Trinidad.  I don't know if there is an archive or not, might be worth looking in to.

Sadly I knew the risks. I expected some crab poaching, but didn’t expect them to be gone altogether. Lol. Lesson learned. On a good note. I picked up a couple small round pots to replace them. It sucks folks can’t/are not willing to put in the work to learn to catch them on their own and have to steal from others.

We will be headed back over this weekend. Planning to crab the bay. Anyone have any areas they would recommend? Thinking of launching near our hotel. Right behind Shamus.
Beyond excited to finally get out there. Crabbing is fueled my desire to get kayaks about 1 yr ago. Can’t wait. Winds look good. Tide doesn’t seem to be too bad. Anything else I should look at?

Bring your rod and fish perch near the mouth of the elk along the pilings.  Keep your traps relatively shallow, don’t set in the channel.  Secure all your gear on land, lots of tweaks and vehicle breakins and burglary in that neighborhood.

Mouth of the elk south to the pge plant at king salmon is going to hold crab.

Kinda what I figured, start at elk and work south. How shallow should I set? Kinda planned on setting on the edge of the channel. Hopefully we catch some crab.

There are areas of mystery breakers between the CG and the rock wall between Buhne Point and Stinky Beach.

I noticed that a couple weeks ago when we were over there. Some swells reappear a bit inside the jetty’s. I plan to stay north of there. Will definitely keep an eye out for changing conditions for sure. Thanks.
