Has anyone been eating mussels from Sonoma County lately?
The biotoxin hotline says there's a warning for Del Norte, Mendo, and Sonoma, but it's been that way for quite a while now. Maybe due to Covid they just haven't been updating it?

Hoping to go mussel picking soon!

It’s being updated, just not safe yet.
Warning! Retiree; Knows it all and has plenty of time to tell you about it.

Does anyone know if the bio toxin advisory for Sonoma county includes gaper and littleneck clams?

Does anyone know when and where certain marine toxins were detected in Sonoma County, causing the current closure?

I wish health officials would take the time to specify what part of Sonoma County is affected by "red tides," domoic acid, etc. It's a long coastline and closing every inch of it because toxins were found somewhere between Doran Beach and Gualala seems a rather arbitrary action. If I pick a mussel smack on the Marin-Sonoma county line, is it safe or dangerous to eat?

I think the warnings generally refer to eating the whole animal (minus the shell).
So with gapers, if you just eat the white flesh of the neck, you should be fine. Same with scallops.

With mussels, oysters, and steamer clams, we eat the viscera, and that's where the danger lies.

Always check on Mussels by making the call:

Shellfish Toxins/ Quarantine Information
The Annual Mussel Quarantine in California is in effect from May 1 through October 31.

Consumers can receive updated information by calling the California Department of Health Services “Biotoxin Information Line” at (800) 553-4133.

Sport harvesting of mussels for human consumption is not allowed along the entire California coastline during this period. All bays and inlets are included in the quarantine.

There is additional information about counties with issues here:
