Hey All,

I couldn't find any reports past 2013 from Bean Hollow, also I'm still getting the hang of this forum so sorry if I missed something!

I was curious. Are Bean Hollow and Davenport still considered sharky?  Also how difficult are they to launch from?  I have a 12' Hobie Compass. This is more out of curiosity.  I need a little more experience under my belt before I'd go out there.

Just wanna know some thoughts on the matter

Beans have always been considered the most ominous vegetable members.  :smt009

When you have 10 posts you'll be able to see the Members Only Fishing Reports page.

Still though, many haven't named those places over the years due to sensitivity/local spot burning consideration.

The Bean can be a very tough launch/landing, and more shark attacks have come on kayaks there than anywhere else, I think.

For sharky training come on up to Shelter Cove to go out with me.   :smt001

Be more afraid of the waves launching and especially landing (where its harder to time the waves) than GWS.
Without naming names there are notorious spots that haven't seen more than a swim by in years and there are spots, once thought to be safe, that now seem to be overrun by GWS.
The best way to stay safe is to find dependable an hopefully experienced fishing buddies.
One way to determine experience is by the sea life listed under their handle. Sealions are a good bet. This is related to number of posts. Number of posts is not a guarantee. Look at their date of registration. A Sealion who registered in 2018/2019 and has 5,000 posts maybe someone who prefers to yak versus learning how to kayak fish.

lol

"There’s a shallow reef along the Bay Area coast where great white sharks can lurk in winter. They roam in hopes of ambushing a sea lion, harbor seal or perhaps a stray elephant seal or its newborn.

Over the past 10 years, great whites twice have attacked kayaks here. The kayakers escaped without injury both times. Other sightings have turned the spot into something of a legend among kayak anglers, many of whom network their encounters through the website of the NorCal Kayak Anglers, www.norcalkayakanglers.com.

The site is Bean Hollow State Beach..

Big Whitey looks up and sees the silhouette of a kayak, or worse, one with a foot-powered drive system that looks like flippers (not a propeller). The sight can trigger attack mode."

The bean is a lovely place to eat shit on launch and landing, get stalked by the tax man, and potentially catch fish... Ive done 2 of the 3, and not too psyched about completing the trifecta.

I do believe there have been more than two strikes at The Bean.

A shark will see a seal like silhouette. However since Hobie fins do not extend past the hull width, they would just be part of the colorless shadow when GWS launch at target from 40-50 feet below.
Statistics haven't shown a preference by GWS for Hobies even though they are very popular boats

The right off the surfing reef at Davenport is called, "shark bite right."  Make of that what you will. :)

Also, not too far to the north of Davenport (and not too far to the south of Bean Hollow) is Ano Nuevo Island, where there is a loft in the old building with 360 degree windows that shark researchers use to observe great whites.  They are often active there around the pinniped breeding colony.  Make of that what you will too.  I slept in that loft years ago while doing seabird restoration work on the island for rhinoceros auklets, but I didn't see any fins while I was up there personally.

As LilRiverMan say though, the surf on launch and landing are definitely the bigger concern.  It can be a heavy paddle out on a surfboard there, let alone a kayak you cannot duck dive.  Probably not a great spot to fish when there is any significant swell, and there is almost every day this time of year.
