Hi folks

Just joined the forum. I’m a California native, born and raised in the Bay Area and now based out of Truckee. I’ve done a lot of trout, Kokanee and Mackinaw fishing up here, both from shore and the yak, and am just now exploring river and ocean fishing down in the valley and the bay.

Would love to get into the herring when they show up. I’m running a Hobbie PA 14’ with sonar and would appreciate any advice on gear and kit for the chase on bigger water. Total newb when it comes to chasing herring.

Thanks!

Hey Mromac, welcome to NCKA! Most of us use a cast net from shore, or piers to catch herring. They move around the bay, and only stay in one area for 1-2 days. You need to be watching this forum or others in order to drop everything and head to the spot.

Items you will need: Cast net (start small), 5 gallon bucket, ice chest, ice, foul weather clothes. I vacuum seal mine in usable portions.

Last season was dismal with them only showing up in a few of the usual spots.

You should check out the Lost Anchovy for more detailed information:

Welcome to NCKA Mromac. Herring is fun stuff! Should you so happen to net some sardines while you're at it, that is bonus fun! or striper, halibut, bat ray...
