Hey all! I’ve got the day off from school on Veteran’s Day. Was looking to take this as an opportunity to try my yak out in the ocean for the first time, probably just around the jaws in HMB. Swells are 5ft every 10 secs. Wind doesn’t look like it’ll go over about 6 knots until after 1. Are these considered safe conditions for a first time ocean launch?

It's honestly too early to call.

Any predictions more than 2 days out are iffy at best. It's the weather, after all. Keep on checking and have a back-up location in case.

There's been a bunch of advice on what wind/swell/waves are safe for going out. A quick search will give you some ideas.

But yes, if the swells are truly 5ft every 10s, with wind at less than 6 knots, I'd probably go out. I'd get seasick, but that's another story. You also want to check wind waves. Most of the time, the wind waves correlate to wind strength, but before and after a large weather event, it's not always the case.

I’ve got the itch to drop a few pots out HMB, but not until the conditions Improve.
I’ll be looking at forecasts as the days get closer. Hope things calm down a bit, maybe i’ll see you out there.

I wanna drop pots as well. Picked up all my necessary gear for kayak crabbing but I don’t think it’s the best idea to drop pots on my first ocean trip. Just wanna get the feel for things first!

If the forecast holds I'll be out there Wednesday with my 7-year-old. Say hi if you see us.

That's a wise call. There will probably be lots of boat traffic, so try to stay out of their way when going through the jaws. Enjoy your first trip on the ocean!
