Looks like there is a lull in the wind tomorow morning. I was going to try Doran and drop a pot and was curious if anybody else is headed out there? The ocean looks rough but bolinas swells are looking calm tomorow morning. Will bodega/Doran  be similar to bolinas? Or is it less protected and going to be nuts?

Looks like the big winds will start around 11am or so.  Bodega and Bolinas is roughly the same.  I would say Doran is a little more exposed because it doesn't have the high cliffs like Bolinas to help block wind.  But if you go deep at Bolinas, then you're pretty much in open ocean.

I would skip tomorrow.  Weather gets better on Monday and on.

Thank you! I’m going to “skip tomorrow”. I just started thinking about all those crab cakes and the swells seemed smaller and smaller.

--Edit-- Wind actually down a little since I last checked

I saw that too and was thinking about going early. Only thing is the swells are still 7 ft. so I'll be waiting.

Looks just too big of swell,
After a few years of doing this you learn that the crabs dig in when the swell is too big and you get jack  squat!
Best to wait...

I know this is a kayak forum so apologies in advance for my question... But have any of you ever gone crabbing off the jetty at Doran?  I'll be out there next weekend for other reasons but really want to give it a try.  I've never gone crabbing before so been doing general research on regulations and equipment (thinking hoop net and maybe try a snare with chicken/squid), but any another must-knows or must-trys would be appreciated, thanks

From my experience throwing snares from jetties, big swell days tend to yield no or few crab.
If you’re already there, it wouldn’t hurt to take a gander.
You will need extra weight to keep the snares on the bottom.
Not a fan of dropping nets or pots from a jetty, current will potentially snag them up.
Rocks may be slippery from the conditions. Be careful and stay safe!

Thanks for the info and recommendations Senko, helpful tips on snares & nets.  And good point on the big swells, I hadn't even looked yet but looks pretty bad when I'll be there...  I'll probably end up skipping this time around but will eventually get out there.

Went out today for not much luck. Sea lion raided and destroyed one pot. 2nd pot full of undersized dungies, 3rd pot I watched somebody drop their pot right on top and tangled, losing most of the crabs in it. Most people I talked to weren't having much luck either. I'll probably try again this coming weekend.

Just a respectful request to keep crab gear away from the channel and entrance to Bodega Bay. Gear here can make for a life and death situation for boaters especially if using excessively long and/or floating line.

This should go without saying. Thanks for the respectful request and the friendly reminder for all of us.  :smt006

I could say the same for the boaters blasting thru the channel in between jetties at Wide Open Throttle.   Just saying ...snaring is good inside the channel for dungies... pots are doable but I’d rather lose a snare then a crab pot. You’ll probably have to add weight to ur snare cause the current will take it to the moon.
