Whale almost swallows kayakers near a California beach

I wasn’t sure if this post should be under “safety first” or “kayak fly fishing”. The flying part is appropriate, but these guys weren’t fishing.
I wonder if sonar, which whales can hear, can prevent such things.

Clearly they mistook them for chovies

or maybe were just generally sick of humans, maybe American ones in particular
