Duq- 3mm wetsuit is the cheapest way to go. Special technical wear like microfiber fleece and coolmax products will run you alot more for a full set. A Drysuit can run you a thousand bucks but is very comfortable and you can where whatever you want under it. If you're just starting off I always advise my students to get a farmer john style 3mm wetsuit that zips. It's around $110 and will save your life if you fell into the cold water. If you're ocean fishing avoid using waders but they're fine for lakes and rivers.

The most important thing is that you protect your bodies core. a longsleeve fleece top with a wetsuit will keep your torso insulated thereby keeping your core tempurature stable while you get out of the fix you're in

A wetsuit is the only way to go in the salt. I used to wear my 7mm farmer john because I already owned it but found it to be pretty dang cumbersome.
I got a year-end deal on a 3mm kayak specific wetsuit for about $60. By kayak specific I mean it covers the legs and torso, not the arms. It's design leaves plenty of room for upper body movement too.
make sure whatever you get has a comfort zipper. It should have a zipper on the bottom when it is zipped up so you can easily relieve yourself should the need be there, and the need will be there.
Not only does the wetsuit provide some protection from the elements, it also provides flotation should you dump and insulation under the same circumstances. It also will not fill with water should you go overboard.
I am sure your legs will be over the sides of your yak in the salt at one time or another. That is another reason you want the wetsuit.
A paddling jacket over that, a decent pair of booties, and a good PFD and you will be set.
Something like this http://www.sierratradingpost.com/p/,24876_Camaro-Freefall-3-mm-Farmer-John-Wetsuit-For-Men.html
But I prefer a zipper at the ankles too.

I echo what Swell said.  I usually wear a 2mil, but its colder at his house so a 3 would be better up north.  A relief zipper is also a great feature to have.
