Bass Pro in San Jose inventory is really low. Are they going out of business or they can't get inventory? Where can we buy local?

Normally they have thousands of rods and reels, but now there are less then 100 rods and reels look sold out.

How is the inventory in Bass Pro Manteca?

Sportsman Expo in Milpitas Closed.

Not impressed with Dicks inventory. Maybe some location are better then others.

I do not want to buy online,  SUPPORT LOCAL!

Last time I was in the Rocklin Bass Pro it was the same or worse than what you are seeing.  Just about everything with the exception of lures were wiped out.  From what I am hearing it is due to a break in the supply chain and not because the stores are going out of business.   Same reason why it is hard to get a kayak.  Same reason why Headwaters in Lodi closed.

In that last month or so I’ve been to the San Jose and Manteca stores.  Both look about the same inventory wise, actually Manteca was much worse.  Not a lot of baits in stock, most of the popular stuff was gone.

Coyote Bait and tackle still has a decent selection of tackle.  Not sure about rods but you can give em a call and see what they have on hand.

I think the supply chain interruption really impacted the rod and reel side of things but the tackle.....covid inspired a lot of people to get outside again.  Gear for the outdoors (any type of fishing, cycling, hiking, camping, running, exercise) has been a hot commodity lately.

Go to Fishery Supply in San Jose, off Story road. It's a locally owned bait/tackle shop owned by a Vietnamese family. They are my go-to place for terminal tackle, bait, and lures. Regarding rods and reels, they have a limited selection, but they do have stock of the most popular rods/reels for Bay Area fishing. You are also not going to get a whole lot of service there, but then, neither will you get it at Bass Pro.

What are you looking for?

Glad to hear they're still around.  I used to swing by there when I would be in the area and they had all kinds of neat stuff not to be found elsewhere.  They had great pricing and it would be fun to find stuff like going through a treasure chest with bonus finds every so often.

Also lots of yummy Viet eateries to eat or take for the road...

I'm not really sure how supporting a global chain out of Missouri that causes local tackle shops to go out of business every time a location opens up is considered "supporting local," but to each their own.  If you're referring to supporting the local employees, then why not order on their website and have it shipped to store.  Their metrics go up as you're shopping at that specific store and the employees of that store are involved in your purchase.

As others have said, all outdoor related gear is in short supply.  Distribution centers, factories, etc were shut down early in the pandemic, which was immediately followed by an unprecedented spike in demand.  Low supply, high demand.

TedSki  I agree they aren't local, but they are the only choice here if you want to touch it before you buy it. It's not worth the couple of dollars to buy from Amazon. If you buy at the store vs store website then it will remain open for my pleasure to view.

A few weeks ago I made a road trip to replace a couple rods. I went to BPS in Manteca, and Rocklin?, and then went to Cabelas in Sparks area. All were picked clean of most rods, popular hooks and lures were barren as well. With Covid everyone has decided they want to start fishing. Im expecting a flooded second hand market next year after everyone realizes they dont actually want to be outside lol.

Cabelas and Bass Pro are all short of just about everything due to the break in the supply chain.
Our kayak dealer, Mariner Sails in Dallas only has about 50 kayaks left, and inventory is real low. They usually have hundreds in the warehouse, but now you can just about walk through the place and have plenty of room.
I did get lucky and was able to purchase my "beast," a three waters 108 pedal drive and love it.

I hear ya on shopping local.  I was only pointing out that Bass Pro Shops is not the best for local businesses to thrive, so it's better to go to mom & pop tackle shops.  I also totally understand that in the present situation with the supply chain issues, BPS may be the only option.

Along the same lines of BPS, West Marine in San Carlos seems to have semi-decent stock availability right now.  Also, Hi's Tacklebox in South City seems pretty well stocked on rods and reels, but may not be worth the trip from SJ.

I really miss Fisherman's Warehouse in SJ, though.  Fairfield is a bit of a hike for me, even from SF.  My inlaws live right up Almaden from where Fisherman's Warehouse was.  Another BPS caused death of a local tackle shop.

to be honest.  even the big online shops seem to be backordered on some the hot items.

having said that, i try to buy local.  i am blessed with Outdoor Pro Shop in Cotati.  shelves are picked bare for the most part, but they do have some slim choice pickings.

A predatory investor recently purchased enough stock in Bass Pro to hold a controlling interest. The effect caused an entire town in Nebraska, where they were headquartered, to lose their jobs. Real estate there has tanked, as those folks have fled to find work elsewhere. This is the cause of lack of inventory.
The investor also owns Cabela's now, so what you are looking for is most likely available there.

I think you might be confused with the fact that BPS bought out Cabela's a few years ago...

CatchMO just got it backwards.  The activist investor Elliott Management invested heavily into Nebraska based Cabela's which forced the sale of Cabela's to Missouri based Bass Pro Shops back in 2016.  As most activist investors do, with their goals met, they then sold the majority of their stake off in 2019.  Not sure how this relates to the current supply chain issues, though.
