Hey guys. Who do you go to for your swell reports? I use magic seaweed, willyweather and noaa. Which one do you think is best?

It's all about having multiple forecasts.  Look for some agreement and strong trends.  When the forecast sounds like it may be marginal and you end up there (my life) - make note of how it turns out compared to what was forecast across the board of NOAA, Seaweed, Stormsurf, Windy...etc.  That comparison - combined with the fact that the different forecast sites vary in their consistency and sometimes change their policies and formats - becomes the best tool you have.

Restated:  you are your best forecast source, but only after studying multiple forecasts for multiple seasons and correlating that to first hand knowledge resulting from frequent ocean trips.

It all starts with the study of those multiple forecasts, and I know it's good fortune to be able to do frequent ocean trips - good luck with that part.   :smt001

In addition to all of those mentioned, this one is worth checking too, both for swell and wind:

I use windy.com and surf-forecast.com.  I like comparing the actual conditions compared to the forecast like Eric mentioned.  I learn to gauge my limits by the numbers they display... :smt006

I use WillyWeather and Windy. Windy gives you the option to look at 4 different models. It seems like the default, ECMWF, is on the high side and GFS is more accurate for the places I fish. WillyWeather is especially useful for tides because it has an easy to read graph. Like others have mentioned, look at a few and get a feel for their accuracy for your spots.

Also, don't just look at the visual forecasts (hourly, daily, etc.).  Read the scientific discussion that NOAA posts.  That will help you understand the predicted rate of change in the weather and what to look for when considering the forecast accuracy.

For example, when the scientific discussion says clouds will push in early in the afternoon followed by high winds and thus wind waves and you see the clouds at 9am, realize the high winds are probably still behind that and they only got the timing wrong.

I like tides4fishing.com - and the associated app.  Easy to use, and lots of local data covering both weather and tides.

Tides4fishing.com and Windy.com are my favorites. I agree with using multiple forecasts. I've used Windy extensively in aviation. I've found it to be fairly accurate when reporting, you guessed it, wind.  :smt001
