Hello all,

Fished Cambria with two other guys (Levi and Rick), for 6 decent reds, a barely legal ling and as many gophers as we wanted.  Action was fast for gohpers, and blues/blacks in places, but they were not huge overall.

Rick is also from Atascadero and described 2 local personal GWS sightings that seemed reasonable.  They were both out of san Simeon area (no, I'm not trying to scare away the non-locals!)

He stated that he had seen a baitball being worked to the surface, and he thought it was seals.  The water was quite clear and he cruzed over to it to check it out.  Looking down, he saw a large stout shark that rolled a bit to the side as he pulled up.  He inidcated he saw the white and grey interface along the belly/side.  With a few tail flicks, it moved away.

In the other incident, he indicated that he saw seals leaping out of the H20 in a area near Piedras Blancas, and he got out his binocs to check it out.  He stated that he saw a shark head break the surface of the H20 and take out a seal, while everyone else scattered.  (landlord 1- furry tenant 0)

Amazing but plausible stories coming from a guy who has fished in alaska on commercial boats, but grey toothed lightning striking twice for one guy is pretty incredible.

Anyway- I also used my PVC sabiki rig and bait tube.  They both worked well but all I caught were small rockfish.

nice, 6 reds, your the red master. how big?

i believe it w/ the GWS, you get out past the kelp & it's whale-city.  you gotta figure everything in the marine-food-chain is moving along that line, around those points; harvey & piedras.

that (white pointers, the man in the grey suit, the landlord, whitey) always crosses my mind as i'm watching the blood trail out of the scupper holes in my rear hold, sort of like laying a chum-slick...

Never seen a shark off of San Simeon or Cambria, Piedras is a different story entirely. That coast is a veritable smorgasbord of high calorie, swimming lard burritos.

I’m still up for a trip any day Fri – Sat.

The reds (vermillions) were anywhere from 12- 20 and went up to 5 lbs.  Understand that that was 6 reds between the 3 of us.  They were all caught near the edge of the kelp or past the kelp using the standard rigs.

Andy

WTG on the reds. 20 inches is HUGE. Sorry I couldn't hookup with you but Piedras Blancas is beyond my comfort zone. After all, it is shark week. I am fishing San Simeon on Saturday but staying in the bay and targeting Halis. If you are in the area say hello. I paddle a yellow P15.
