Young Guy in an Old Boat

Hello!  My name is Spencer and I'm in Santa Cruz. I didn't grow up fishing or paddling, and I've lived in Santa Cruz for nearly 6 years but then suddenly I woke up one morning and said "What am I DOING?!?! I live here right on the water and I don't even take advantage of it!" and began searching for a kayak (still not even thinking about fishing).

Well, I finally found a kayak that suited my student budget... An ancient teal blue original OC Scrambler being sold by it's original owner for a pittance. I know there are folks with a dozen kayaks lying around but let me tell you I love that old plastic barge more than anything. I've done a bunch of modifications to it; installed dryhatches, made handles, cupholder, built a crate on a little ledge so it fits in the back tank, all sorts. I'm trying to decide if I want to try to install a rudder, or if I want to just save the money for a boat upgrade someday.

Of course the second I post about my new boat, a friend comes out of the woodwork and says "Fishing?!?!" So he loaned me a bunch of gear and showed me the ropes and we went Rockfish fishing in our yaks. I caught a bunch of fish, gave some to my friends, and had an incredible fish supper at home so now I'm hooked!

The original Scrambler was/is an amazing craft.

I landed a 38 pound Chinook on my Scrambler XT in 2006 - barely fit it in the front hatch due to girth.
