Hello all,
I am an experienced sea kayaker. I like coastal paddles up and down the Northern California coast in my Perception Avatar and playing in the rocks in my Jackson Karma R/G. I've also done short expeditions in Alaska and Norway. I have a Hobie Adventure pedal kayak that I use for crabbing just outside the Golden Gate and will use for fishing. I know absolutely nothing about fishing but am eager to learn. I'd appreciate any pointers to the best introductory material and suggestions on how to get started.
Thanks!
Jonathan

Hi. Do you know about Bay Area Sea Kayakers (BASK)? We go out rock gardening on a regular basis and, before the pandemic, also had clinics. Contact me and we can discuss what might be right for you.

Hi Jonathan!

I've surfed my river boat in the ocean many times but always stayed away from rocks. But watching "rock gardening" videos has got me intrigued. Looks a little like running medium pour-overs on the river with some complications (ephemeral and constantly changing features). Looks fun.

That's funny. I've done very little white water paddling and I felt most comfortable when there were rocks in the river that reminded me of the ocean! I would add that the features change with the tide.

Today a fellow paddler took me fishing from Linda Mar and we caught a bunch of rock fish and an amazingly blue Ling Cod. My friend is a life long fisherman and was about 10 times more successful than me, which I think is an indication of how much skill is involved and how much I need to learn. Just recognizing when my line hit the bottom was a challenge. And I lost more than a few fish from my hook. Lots of fun though!

That sounds like a good day!

There's definitely a whole new world of techniques to learn, get proficient at, and eventually master. That's half the fun.

I grew up in and around the ocean and even though I've probably spent far more hours on whitewater rivers I'm still more at home on ocean waves.
