So I’d be honest with you, the Outback 2020 is too cluttered. And I still don’t understand how they call it “the fishing machine” when there is no way to mount a downrigger to it!
I use the Scotty lakemaster, which is the lightest weight downrigger, and if I mount it with the Scotty adapter to the outside (plastic) rail, then it wobbles like crazy (with the 4lb lead ball) and makes using the downrigger very difficult and unsafe. As if catching Salmon is not hard enough.
Now I’ve seen some people buying those plastic plates that mount to BOTH rails, and then put the Scotty mount on that plate. I really liked that, but I couldn’t find references. So I made my own. I tell you, it’s a game changer. So while I wouldn’t take credit for the idea, I’m proud of the execution and the parts I chose. My design is also different, and I think improved because the Scotty is actually mounted to the rail via the plate on one side. See images below.
Here are the details:
The plastic is from TAP Plastics (order online $10; add s&h). It’s 0.5 inch thick. I forget the size I cut and the placement of the holes, but I’d say be very careful where you drill the holes because the two rails are not exactly perpendicular and this may cause problems when you actually insert the plate or if you want to move it up or down. The bolts are aluminum for Camera rigs. A pair is $8, and you need 6. The threading is 1/4-20. Work awesome. The T-bolts are 1.5” and 2” Mighty bolt from YakAttack (Each 6 pack is ~ $16, but you need 2 of each). You also need 2 stainless steel screws (again, 1/4-20 threading, 2” long), and I had to buy a pack.
You can see from the pictures what I did. I have a table saw and a mitre saw. It would be pretty hard to build this device without them. All in all though, it’s a tank. I can launch a Bazooka from this thing. I can operate with one hand and bring the ball up from 30ft at no time.

Nice design! I myself just made a plate for my Craigslist acquired Scotty 1060. Made it out of a plastic leftover chopping board from Ross. At a 45 degree angle(weight closer to center of kayak). Now I’m brainstorming how to make a rotating mount lol.

Salmon aren't that hard to catch and a downrigger isn't necessary on a kayak.  The 2020 Outback is a beast to move around and tracks like shit.  The rudder is junk.   There is a guy making an aluminum aftermarket rudder that's much better, but the extra weight and lifting it above my head is much more taxing then the previous model Outback.

A lot of hyperbolic opinions here... Salmon are pretty hard to catch.  I find them elusive and rewarding.  When they become easy, maybe it is time to move on to something else.  There is a reason a shit-load of people use downriggers.  Why?  Because salmon are hard to catch.  I love my 2020 outback.  Rudder is holding up fine.  Turns out, there is a market for these boats because they are awesome.  The "guy" making the aluminum rudder is a member here with a name and is offering a service we should all be grateful for.  He doesnt have to make and sell those items - the fact he does just enhances the community.

i put a scotty 1060 downrigger on a mount like that with a 6 pound ball and it’s held up just fine. It’s a solid fishing machine with tons of options, but it does track like shit. I wasn’t happy with how to rudder comes warped from the factory. Other than that it’s a great kayak

Love my lake troller. Good for ocean and lake. Puts your line right where you want it. I mounted it on my 2019 outback got alot of my ideas from Moo Moo. Only thing I haven't done yet is change out the steel line, to quiet it down and safety
.  YouTube guys have good ideas
