Hello everyone, My name is Grant but you can also just call me Coach.  I’ve been fishing casually my whole life (27) and it’s really not until recently that I’m starting to really study the craft and do a lot of research.

I recently bought a used fishing kayak and I live super close to the American river so I just been carrying it about half mile or so and launching under the Howe bridge.  I also have a foam block roof rack system for short distance travels.

Anyways I would love to get to know some of you kayak anglers in the Sacramento Area and maybe fish together sometime.  I really want to learn how to catch a salmon from my kayak but I would feel more comfortable if I had some other people with me.  Please help!

In another month you’ll be able to toss Mepps 5 spinners off your yak at the water tower and catch them river salmon!!
Welcome and good luck!
Matt

Thanks for the welcoming everyone! And thank you for the tip Matt I will definitely give that a try.  It’s funny I was looking through my dads old tackle box and found a bunch of mepps lures that are god knows how old, they are still in the packaging too.  I’ll see it I can find a way to post a pic I’m curious how old they are but I would guess 90’s or 80’s.

welcome!!

i remember reading that Mepps Catalog over and over again as a 8 year old..the lures, the fishing stories..

i remember dedicating my day trying to catch something (when i was grown up) on a Mepps #3 Black Fury.  i got so skunked while others around me were killing it with Super Shads.  hahha.

i bet i can still find that #3 Black fury in a box somewhere..i should waste another day soon.

Welcome! I'm new here too.

I live in East Sac, I am working on buying a yak. I would be down to get together with some fellow Sac fisherman.

I'm up the hill a bit, outside Placerville, but I would love to fish the American for some salmon. Still waiting on delivery of my Lifetime Tahoma (basically a Tamarack without the rod holders), but I'm anxious to be out there.

Another east sac kayaker. Haven’t done the American in my kayak- but I can tell you that drifting it on a paddle board  is a very bad way to fish.

American can be tricky- To get started it is hard to do better than the turning basin in west sac. Easy access, good place to get used to your gear- and apparently a chance for salmon there too

I agree, West Sac has a lot of honey holes. I have pulled many Striper out of there. Last time I went out I saw a guy in a yak bring in a salmon.
