Currently I have a Scotty 1050 Depthmaster manual downrigger on my kayak and works great, but my DIY brain is itching again. Does anyone here know how much larger and heavier the Scotty 1099 DepthPower electric dr is compared to the 1050? It's surprisingly difficult to find the info on the internet.

I know that some folks use electric fishing reels as kayak DRs. I gone one off eBay, been meaning to set it up... Need to figure out the smallest battery that I can use.

That's my 17.5Ah I make. Look at my signature if you are interested.

I mounted it on my Revo 11 with a metal bar that spans the width and it was a success. However, a 4lb ball is too light... I think a 6-7lb ball is a minimum to get the weight down quickly. Other than that it worked well trolling exclusively for salmon for 8 hours wired to a 10aH battery that also powers my fish finder. It's pretty heavy so the biggest disadvantages are the additional weight and setup time.

Brought it out three times and caught a thresher and 3 salmon with it. It works great and as long as the power never fritzes out on me I can foresee me using this exclusively over the Scotty 1060 Depth King that I was using earlier. A 6lb ball is definitely a minimum and a 7lb ball is better. I swapped out to 200lb braid and cut the boom short. Next time I go out I'll take a pic of the setup OTW.

Just found out that the electric downrigger can survive a dump in the surf. Relief!
