There's been some red tide in Half Moon Bay, and Santa Cruz (and probably everywhere between) for the past week or so. I'm blaming it for being skunked surf fishing twice.

Does anyone know if it has been dissipating, getting worse, or just more of the same? Is there any weather to look out for that would reduce it?

I haven't noticed any in Santa Cruz recently.

Santa Cruz looked a lot better than last week.
I didn’t notice any today.

Based on second hand info from a boater in Santa Cruz today, red tide was an issue in Capitola today. This same guy caught one 24" halibut just outside the brown-out area.

I forgot to mention that today I was mostly out in deeper water (like 80-90) past the mile buoy and points west. I didn't notice any red tide issues there.

And while I'm at it, here's a mini-report...

I was out of the harbor by 5:20am and had planned to go a ways out (like 6+ miles) and try to intercept the BFT and (more realistically) troll for salmon. But conditions really sucked early, so after about 3 miles I gave up, and came back in to fish near the squid boats (that's where the 80 to 90 fow beyond the mile buoy comes from). There were at least 20 boats crammed together in a small area there, but I didn't see anything other than a few rockfish being caught. So, I eventually headed west, mostly staying out relatively deep.

Overall, I got a nice variety of rockfish (blacks, blues, browns, verms, olives, coppers, a canary, and even a boccacio, I believe), and a couple of very-nearly legal lingcod. I didn't keep any, as I was looking for bigger fish to fry (or bake or broil).

I was prepared for a fairly long day, so I ended up spending 7.5 hours on the water, covering 12.6 miles. The fish survey people were at the harbor, and it sounded like a scratch halibut bite.

OK, maybe that was a full report...

That's a solid day of being out on the water!
