Bought my first "old" kayak yesterday. A Malotte SOT that needs a little work to get it ocean ready. I've been fishing for close to 30 years but have never done it from a kayak. HAd a 20' ranger bass boat and sold it a few years back when I moved to the coast. Recently I have only been hitting the surf. I'm sure there are a few people here in the Aptos / Santa Cruz area. I don't know that much about ocean fishing and nothing about doing it on a kayak.

Welcome. There are a lot of us who fish regularly in the Santa Cruz area. Once you get 10 posts, you can see more reports.

I've been reading a lot of the safety topics as well as the tips and realize that there is a lot more to going out in the ocean than I thought!! Dry suits, radios, gps, leashes, flotation for gear, and not going out alone. It will be a while before I can get all of that gear together but I also want to re gel coat the kayak before hitting the water.

Welcome Dave C.  Good to have another Dave onboard.  This may be a little different than a Ranger but you'll get used to it!

Welcome! I'm on the west side of SC, and have recently become addicted to kayak fishing. See you out there!

Welcome to NCKA, Dave.

I'm curious about your Malotte.  I know that board to be a minimalist dive platform, and I think it may be very challenging to fish from it effectively and safely.  Just my initial thoughts - don't want to throw water on your stoke!

Please keep us updated on how you progress with outfitting as well as what you experience when you get out on it.

Best of luck - enjoy.   :smt001
