Hey,

I'm in a contact with Hobie for TI fix - warranty has expired, bur it seems that part (centerboard) might be defective and they appear to be willing to "extend warranty". They ask me to work through the dealer though.

I bought kayak used (which came from San Diego), so no dealer relationship (I bought bunch of stuff from CCK, but not this TI).  Any suggestions who to contact? CCK in RWC is closest to me.

Thanks,
Sebastian

Don't quote me on this, but I think all that matters to the dealer is the serial # on your Hobie. They can use that to find out if it's still within warranty. That happened to me once when I had an issue on a pre-owned Mirage drive. CCK just took the serial #and replaced parts as needed. No questions asked.

Hi Sebastian.  I have had a similar issue, except my hobie was only 6 months old, but still bought 2nd hand.  I loved CCK in RWC but the one issue I have had with them that kinda soured that relationship is they refused to do any warranty work on my kayak because I didn't have a receipt from them. I ended up paying for the parts and doing it myself... I can't imagine your experience will differ much.

I called Hobie and asked about this, and they said that the dealer should be doing warranty work regardless of where it was purchased, but I didn't feel like arguing and left it at that after they refused.

Edit: On the Hobie forums I have found the following:

"As far as warranty goes, Dealers are independent and we can only suggest that they should do warranty on a product they did not sell.

Seems like theres not a good standard if we are seeing different things posted by staff online versus told on the phone.

Thanks, Christian. I was afraid something like this might happen, hence the topic. Was kind of hoping we had relationship with CCK - after all I'm sure many of us are spending good money there.

I'll give them a call and will report here.

P.S. Centerboard + misc parts are less than $200, won't break the bank, but I'm really concerned it needs replacement after so few uses. And there are quite a few reports on Hobie forums complaining about the same.

You could try WindToys too. I did buy my Hobie from them, so your experience might be different, but I find their customer service to be excellent. They totally helped me big time w a warranty issue.

CCK has been willing to help me with warranty issues for Hobie kayaks I did not buy there, for whatever that’s worth.

I'm a little bit surprised by that. I had a warranty issue on a Hobie that I bought online, and I talked to 3 different local Hobie dealers and all were willing (and even seemed eager) to do such work. In the end, Hobie decided to just replace the whole thing, so no warranty work was done.

Happy to report that I've just got my centerboard. CCK @ RWC were fast with warranty claim even though I have not bought it from them, and Hobie shipped promptly.

Pleasantly surprised by (and definitely appreciate) Hobie's willingness to extend warranty way beyond their original 2 years

For those with 2015/16 TI - the original bolt that, according to Hobie's rep was likely a culprit, is way shorter than the new one I received. If this is the case, and after I've seen several reports of the same online, it might make sense to proactively change the bolt - and minimize chances having to change the whole centerboard later.

Wow!! you guys have good luck. I had my mirage drive lock break 2 weeks ago and called yesterday and they again asked me where i bought it and then told me they couldn't help me beyond directing me to the part number to order a new one.

Hi Yakuza, This threads about 2nd hand boats. That said, I still have all the original included sales information and even warranty card, but not a receipt from the previous owner- just bill of sale.

Just curious what happened to it. That seems like an extremely robust part.

The spring inside of it seems to have broken in 2 spots so the lock wont stay closed :(
