Anyone know what type/kind of fish this is? Caught him/her poke pole fishing near Capitola.

Was super mean, snapping is super large sharp teeth at me and making grunting noises. It was about 16" long.

Released back into the hole in which it came from.

Thank you.

Looks like an albino Cabazon, was it really as white as it appears in the picture?

Yes, maybe even more white then the image shows.

Head was pretty flat shaped, so thought it was a cabezon, caught a few of those this morning also, but all under legal length.

Jim, can you repost that video?  I couldn't get it to work via the link....

Coincidentally, I ran across a washed-up midshipman today at New Brighton Beach. Looked it up yesterday after reading this post.  they spend most of their time in super deep water like 1000's of feet deep.  But in Spring, they swim all the way up the hill to lay eggs.  They can survive above the low tide line breathing "through their skin."  Their eggs adhere to nearshore rocks and can also survive air exposure during low tides.  Interestingly, they have a pattern of 100's of bioluminescent dots on their body appaprently to fool predators while in the deep.  Called photophores. The dots resemble the rows of brass buttons on old naval uniforms, hence the the name "Midshipman."

They also are very vocal, making grunts and humming sounds during the mating process.  I took pix of the dead fish just to illustrate the photophores.  This one was about 13" long.

Bushy  ps I add a picture of a nice, clean BSP from today, just to have some balance after the grody midshipman rotten carcass pix.
