I snagged a halibut and it wasnt very happy about it! It slapped me in the face and I almost lost my lucky hat! Fortunately I only lost a little pride. I hope you enjoy and thanks for watching!

Work is for people who don't know how to fish

Ha! That’s funny. Instant karma for measuring a foul-hooked fish that you couldn’t legally keep anyway. ;)

Snagging is a legal method of take for most ocean fish, including halibut.

You guys do know that it’s legal to keep a foul hooked halibut, right?

Everything I've read in the regulations to date hes not supported that... i don't take foul hooked fish home on principle but also pretty sure that its not legal take myself.

"1.05. ANGLING. Angling means take of fish by hook-and-line with the line held in the hand, or
with the line attached to a pole or rod held in the hand or closely attended in such manner that the
fish voluntarily takes the bait or lure inside its mouth."

The only thing that mentions snagging or foul hooking in the regs is in the Freshwater part
(yes, it is not the same as salt water regs, but imo consistency is to be expected), and it states
"(b) Snagging is prohibited. Snagging is defined as
impaling or attempting to impale a fish in any part
of its body other than inside the mouth by use of a
hook, hooks, gaff, or other mechanical implement.
This definition does not include activities otherwise
authorized under these regulations for the lawful
use of a gaff, bow and arrow, or spear."

You aren’t limited to angling in the ocean except for salmon and sturgeon, which you also aren’t allowed to foul hook.

28.65(d) is the general regulation that covers snagging, defining any hook used to take a fish other than in the mouth is considered a gaff.

We free gaff Hitchhiker lingcod all the time, and lingcod aren’t treated any differently in the regs than halibut for method of take.  You can jump in and spear one if you want to.

Makes sense to me. reads as do what every you want to it if its legal size I guess.  Thats where i think ethically and sportsman like "I just hooked this thing in the ass, am I really gonna snip its gills and put it on the stringer?"  I guess for me its case by case because like you said, i have also free gaffed lings

Well that’s an interesting interpretation that seems to make sense at face value.

I just searched the regs for the word “snagging” and it shows up as illegal for stripers, too.
