A shark attack was one of my biggest fears when I bought my kayak and the first thing I did was install 4 large noodles in my P15.  If you have a P15, please look at my original post (http://www.norcalkayakanglers.com/bb/index.php?topic=3590.msg29978#msg29978) and you will see a picture of the noodles that I am referencing.  I tied them together to make sure they would not come out if a big hole was made by a shark or rock.  My biggest fear was my kayak sinking which leaves you helplessly floating in the water.  My thought was if my kayak continues to float, the shark would eventually realize it was an inanimate object and leave me alone.  Of course, the story changes if I have fish on board.

Isda,

I think this is a great idea, one I've not heard before. I'm buying some pool noodles today for installation in my P15. Thanks for the tip!  :thumleft:

Kim

Love it!

Oh no.. the kayak floatation topic has come back alive.  It's like a hydra you think you one head is chopped off and another pops up.

One of the longest threads on the forum is about kayak floation, pool noodles and injectable foam.  It's been read over 4000 times and has 9 pages of posts.

no really, what about floatation foam in your kayak?

I admit to having a larger drybag for my coat/raingear, it's watertight and has a valve to seal air in or out! It lives in the front of my yak if I have room.(way too much gear guy)

bsteves,  thanks for putting up the link to the thread of foam!

if the freaking kayak manufacturers would just make a sink-proof kayak, I would not have to
make giant threads like that and steal my kids pool noodles.

they make them wider and shorter for the fat-assed bass fishing masses, but the rest of us
are left to fend for ourselves to have a sink-proof kayak.

my 7 year old actually hid his pool noodle from me! I kept cutting them up and using them for things
like rod floatation, gaf flotation, kayak floatation.

that expanding foam did not work for me, I would go noodle all the way. guitarzan was able to make it
work for him, I think he's a little more handy than me. I'd love to see what scwafish or KZ could do with that stuff!

No problem.

I'm guessing though that all this shark talk outside the "Offical GWS Thread" must bug as well.

Floatation is good for more obstacles than sharks. A couple years ago some very experienced fiberglass SIKers were exploring rock gardens off the Mendocino coast when two of them were bashed against the rocks. The stern of one boat was broken off, and if it weren't for the floatation bags in the paddler's bow and stern, he/she wouldn't have been able to get back to shore. The bow/stern (can't remember) of the other boat was punctured, but a good application of duct tape allowed that paddler to go on. Good reason to have duct tape and a bow line or tow rope on board, too. S&*t happens...

I also have an idea utilizing pool noodles.  I plan to test it out.  I'd love to see who comes up with the best idea.

I do get a mite frustrated when the world won't do exactly what I want sometimes,   :smt002.

Noodles are real cheap right now. I got a bunch at a local grocery store for a buck each.

If anyone knows where to find em in the San Jose or Fremont areas, please let me know.  I have a tranducer to mount, plus I like the idea of some extra flotation in the kayak.

Thanks,
Eric

Thanks.  I was surprised when I didn't see em at Walmart or Mel Cottons.

Check out Long's, also.  Maybe, even Walgreen's.  I know Long's had them.
