I need to go pick up a yak on Friday and I am without a roof rack and I am embarrassingly broke.

So I think I can get a fit kit that works for me, and I would just need the 460 series feet and cross bars 50"+.   I will pick up and drop back off, if you can part with them from Thurs-Sat...

Shot in the dark, but just asking.  Thank you!

I don't have one but It can be done without a having roof rack carrying your yak. I would make sure to additionally use a bow and stern line to help secure it.

Where is the kayak and where does it need to go?
I’ll just throw it on my truck.

Thanks guys, appreciate the offer and advice, but unfortunately it is a 3-hour freeway drive home (after I pick it up). I didn't really go into this with a plan, obviously. But I need to get back on the water.

I should probably add, I would be totally fine picking up/dropping off a loaner anywhere from Monterey to Modesto to Santa Rosa - that kind of radius.

I have a Yakima rack listed in the classified section I would let go for free to someone in need. Take a look, it has the clips(different for most vehicles) for a Nissan Leaf.

Mark, thanks, that is incredibly kind of you. Although you would not need to give them away if I could just use them for the day on Friday. For the clips, what I could do is take what you have over to racknroad in San Rafael and see what they say I need.  Do you think that is a decent plan?

I really won't need a rack for a couple of months or more. Gotta outfit the yak, so I don't see hitting the Berkeley flats til mid-summer.

You can check what is needed on the Yakima site, and the see if they have the clips in stock.

They stopped making the Q-clips after 2016 and have transitioned to "base clips" or "baseline" attachments.  By searching reviews and forums I figured out that the Q-clips I need are Q99.

I am not sure if anyone local will carry Q-clips but I'll see. So far the only Q99 clips I can find online are on the east coast and would not get here before Friday.

Where on the rack is the model no?  I have a pair I was planning to sell, don't know what "Q" they are. Yakimas, 48" bars. I think they were originally off a Geo Metro. I'm in Elk Grove.

If all else fails, then some foam blocks and 4 tie downs.  2 on the roof, 1 in the front, and 1 in the rear.
I have two foam blocks and dakine rack pads that you can borrow from Fri-Sun.  I don’t fish weekends.

I will def keep the foam blocks in mind, thanks!

I am not sure the Yakima will work with my car after all, even after I spent $100 on new Q-clips. Yakima doesn't want them used on cars made after 2016, and mine's a 2018 Mazda6.

If it is a Thule fixpoint rack, the foot packs are cross bars would be all I'd need for the trip. There's a fit kit on CL down in Monterey that would work for me.

Craig!!

Long time no see. And you're gonna get out on a kayak too!

I'd go with foam and straps. Use a couple of the 1" wide nylon ratchet straps to hold the kayak to the roof. DO NOT OVER-TIGHTEN.

Use rope to secure the bow and stern. I strongly recommend tying the bow and stern using right and left attachment points. An inverted "V" if you will. 3/8" nylon rope, use truckers hitches and you're golden.

Hey Scott!  Yeah hopefully paddling is like riding a bike and I won't need lessons from you again. But I'm sure you know what boat I am heading up to Fort Bragg to get, so all bets are off. This time it's in yum yum yellow, tho. Safety and all.

As you and The Cook said, the foam will work, I would just need to figure out if I can find tie points on my car and make it so the rope doesn't mess up the finish. It is still a last resort, though. Hoping I can just find a regular Thule rack to borrow if I can get the fit-kit for my car on my own.

If this was six month ago I would have given you my parts. I sold them. Sorry

You might roll down windows and  run thin webbing, like the stuff Harbor Freight sells, thru the openings and tighten. You can roll windows up. My son went back to Alaska with a 19 foot sea kayak with no trouble this way.
