All, I'm new to this and would like some advice.  I'm in the Napa area and looking to get into kayak fishing.  I've fished a lot, owned boats, etc. but just want something simple where I can catch a few fish.

I'll probably fish lakes mostly because I've got really easy access to Berryessa and Hennessey, but I might also enjoy hitting the napa river as well, and maybe once i'm more comfortable I could try rockfish off the Sonoma coast.

Any advice on what I should look for in a kayak given what I want to use it for?  Also are there any spots near the napa area where you can try them out?

I've spent a good bit of time reading this board as well and was also wondering:

1) if i'm fishing lakes or rivers, is a paddle better than pedaling....do the pedal drives get hung up on trees, kelp, seaweed, etc.?  Pedaling seems better so that you have hands free, but was curious.

Welcome to NCKA Dave. :smt006. Best to visit a dealer once they all open back up and see the different types of drives, designs, and features.  Most have some type of demo program.  I prefer pedal drives for the reason you stated, it keeps your hands free to fish and steer the kayak.
