I think I have decided on the Tiger rod paired with an older penn reel. What weight and size rod is recommended?

This is what I have...7 ft one piece...make sure you order the right rod, not for a spinning reel.   :smt006

Thanks. I just don’t want to go too heavy, but still have enough for the larger lings and maybe halibut.

ML is medium light.  Heavy is just too heavy...even medium is too heavy, at least for me...

I agree. Stay on the lighter side with Ugly Stiks. Too heavy and you'll wind up with one of those stout party boat trolling rods.
May the fish be mighty and the seas be meek...

I agree. I want to have fun catching the normal fish but still have enough rod to fight the larger ones as well. Looks like ML might be the best for me.

Gollywomper,   Let me know if you need an old penn reel.  I have a couple laying around.  Price is right - Free of course.                       Herb N.

I have a Tiger ML paired with an old Squidder, and a Tiger M paired with a 209.  Both are fine though the ML seems to bend a lot when it's cranking on a lot of weight.  Lings and halibut are just heavy and not fighters as I have discovered in my short kayaking career.  You won't do wrong with either style rod.

Thanks for the replies. I have a 209 I will be putting on one rod and need to find another reel for a second rod. Might see about having the reels gone through and drags upgraded when I find a second one.

I use a ML for smaller stuff and a M for salmon and CA/Pac halibut. I lost big Halibut on the ml in Monterey. Not enough rod for the fish I had on. Smaller halibut to 20lbs would be ok.

Well, maybe you haven’t met the right one yet!  :smt002

The few Hali’s I’ve caught fit that description. Lings on the other hand, can take some runs and try to shake free. A 20# er with attitude on an ML is a lot o fun.

I have the M which works well when using a lot of weight especially bounce balling.  Paired with a Penn 500 reel.  It’s never felt too stiff for me and it’s responsive even on smaller rockfish.

I’m interested in trying the ML though

My two favorite jigging rods are Tiger Elite jigging/casting rods - a 6'6" medium heavy 3/4-4 oz lure, and a 6'3" medium heavy 4-7 oz lure.  I have removed the  gimbal mount from the end of the butt of each of the rods because the gimbal mount doesn't fit easily into most of the rod holders I use, and I have extended the butt of each of the rods to make it easier to jig with the butt of the rod in my armpit.  With the longer butt (17"-18" long behind the reel), the hand which holds the rod is well in front of my chest, and I can operate the spool release of the baitcaster reels I use easily with the thumb of that hand, and reel in line with the other hand.

I do a lot of jigging within a few inches of the bottom in fairly deep water, typically 170-240 feet deep.  I prefer 300 or 400 size baitcaster reels with counterbalanced power handles and a fast retrieve rate (at least 7:1), because (a) they make it easy to adjust my line to keep my lure in contact with the bottom, (b) they have enough line capacity for deep water, (c) the power handle makes it much easier to winch big fish up from the bottom (I find the two-paddle handles found on most baitcaster reels inadequate for hauling in big fish), (d) the counterbalance keeps the heavy power handle from dropping from 12 o'clock to 6 o'clock and pulling my lure up away from the bottom when I didn't want to reel in line, and (e) the fast retrieve rate helps me get my lure up from the bottom quickly.

I prefer fairly stiff or fast action rods for jigging because they allow me to control the jig precisely right above the bottom, because they let me feel even light bites, and because they let me set the hook quickly and hard when I get a bite.  I find that soft or light action rods bend when I lift them, and eventually uncoil and flip my lure up in a manner which is harder to control in small jigging motions.  And the hook set is slower and softer with a light action rod.

Gollywomper,
Take your pick.  Penn 65 low ratio under 3, or Penn Sail fish 140.  These are old reels.  The price is right FREE.  Got a Master power stick G model PS270 7' 10-25 if you can figure out how to pick it up from Daly City.
