Kind of a second introduction for me, but I'm not sure where else to put this.
Is anyone in the Fort Bragg area planning on yak fishing come May 1? I'm pretty new and don't have a fish finder or VHF yet (I have a PFD and wetsuit) so it would be cool to be near people and also to ask questions about setting up a Kayak.

PM me if you wanna link up. I have a launching spot in mind, but we can talk about it.

And for the record, I have spoken with the City Manager's office already and believe this is within the rules if you are local :)

Cheers,
Michael

Wish I was local! Go get um! Solo tripping though, try to beg borrow or steal at least a VHF for safety. Welcome to the madness!!!
my new name should be Ostridge. Got my head in the sand. Going fishing and letting go of the other stuff I can't control anyway!

So is Albion/ fort brag open and accessible for fishing on May 1st?
Been looking at the website for San Mateo County and its marinas, still no word on when they will open?
Called pillar point last week. they said if you have a slip you can get out but if not the parking lots and ramp remains closed.
Anyone have any info on when they will reopen and we can fish again?
Thanks

Are police checking id's / giving parking tickets up there? if not its most likely going to be a mob fest up there.

All the public beaches and boat ramps are closed. I don't know of a public-access point where you could launch a kayak.

Hotels and B&Bs are closed as well. Restaurants only for takeaway. Masks are mandatory now.

Also you should be aware that locals are likely to be pretty hostile. We don't have an outbreak yet, our hospital is barely able to manage in the regular flu season and is woefully understaffed and underfunded, and we have a large proportion of older and otherwise vulnerable people. Out-of-area people are (rightly) seen as potential disease vectors, and a lot of locals are really irritated by the folks who feel entitled to travel in spite of the danger.

So yeah, if a bunch of people show up with kayaks and out-of-County plates, the police and Sheriff are likely to notice, and start handing out those $1000 fines.

We don’t have county license plates in the state of California. Also how many generations must one live in Mendocino county to truly be a local, surely more than one?

I think by the third generation, you may be considered a local in some areas of the county  :smt003

Welcome. Second the vhf. We have had the fog roll in and out here on the monterey coast lately. Navigation units always make it a more confident trip under foggy conditions. Even if it only a phone app with reception.

Fog has been appearing and disappearing here as well, sometimes thick heavy fog just slams down with little warning. Wouldn't want to be too far offshore when that happens. The wind has been blowing a lot too - it's that time of year. Seas are rough and there was a long-period groundswell last week, so I suspect the fishing isn't going to be real good for a while.

I just ordered an extra radio to loan when going out with someone who doesn't have one. As rough as the ocean is here and as easy as it is to get in trouble, we really need to have that ability to stay in touch.
