As long as "my area" is the Bay Area I'm going with no. If the the definition of "my area" is reduced to just the East Bay Area then I would reconsider.

Also at what point does exercise become recreation?

Shelter in place doesn’t mean take a 2 hr drive to a fishing spot. Fish your local water and respect the rules. We will all be back to our normal lives a little sooner. Chances of spreading virus to rural communities with less healthcare resources is irresponsible.

My local waters are closed to kayaks and boats. (Can’t drive in to launch). And good luck trying to find a place to park. So my options are limited locally

I would have to travel to Any other county to launch the kayak.  I'm thinking me personally yes it's okay if I'm the only one on the beach, but if everyone is doing it then no because then the beach will be crowded, cars parked end to end next to each other people passing casually and who am I to tell someone else not to do something I am.

so I guess I'm just waiting this one out.

As much as the wishful thinker in me would like to say yes, I dont think that's the correct answer and deep down we probably all know that. While being out on a kayak seems like the perfect self-isolation spot, that's really not in the spirit of what's going on big picture wise. I've seen a few people out fishing from the bank locally but I've resigned myself to not heading out until the SIP is over.

I took some carcasses out of the freezer the other day, drove 15 miles to a launch spot at HMB at the crack of dawn and dropped some crab pots and paddled around and pulled enough so my family and i could eat crab 3 nights in a row. Exchanged pleasantries with 2 other crabbing yaks at a shouting distance. Drove straight home from the launch. I think that's the limit for "local area fishing."  I'm furloughed from work and mostly caring for my kids all day and I was much more pleasant to be around after that little excursion. I'd love to bring home some rockfish for family meals after the opener  but it would have to be similar situation-wait until conditions are safe at one of the more off-the-beaten path launches, go at the crack of dawn and use artificials and whatever gnarly refrozen bait I have in the freezer. I'll resist the temptation to travel for better quality fish or easier launch.

We definitely need to be aware of and limit our movements. However
Chances are it’s already spread to many rural communities. Ya think anyone from a rural area might work in a big city? Say as a doctor, cook, grocery clerk?

Seems pretty unlikely in Tinker’s case.

There are newly issued guidelines for SIP in Humboldt.

Here's a synopsis from an email I got:

The order directs all businesses and governmental agencies to cease non-essential operations at physical locations in the county and prohibits all non-essential gatherings of any number of individuals. The order also demands the cessation of all non-essential travel and places limits on properties available for rent.

My eye goes right to these points:

- PROHIBITS ALL NON-ESSENTIAL GATHERINGS OF ANY NUMBER OF INDIVIDUALS
- DEMANDS THE CESSATION OF ALL NON-ESSENTIAL TRAVEL

This worldwide catastrophe and cooperation effort is based on saving as many lives as possible.  People have this virus and don't even know it much of the time - it's being spread by those who think that the rules don't apply to them.

To think that your fishing is essential is selfish and wrong.
