I finished up the Yak Rack thanks to COVID-19. I built the frame, then decided to build a few shelves on it. It slides on each side and over the motorcycle which gives me a few more feet of garage space.

That's great. Love the way it goes over your bike.

How many kayaks can that hold? You’re better off raising it. To the ceiling if it’s just one.

Of course I thought of that before I started planing the rack. The rack will hold two easily. With the rack I can work on the yak easily, have an additional 16 feet of shelving for all my fishing gear, and have storage for rods underneath the 8 foot shelf. It just works out better for my situation. Off to the next project...

I spruced up my archery target with new faces on each side.
Burned the wood and made the faces so I can unscrew them, one on each side, and replace the skins easily when they get shot out.
Next project is rod storage.
Toying around with a gas strut rafter idea.
I'll be sure to post if it turns out.

Should have made it bigger, so you don't hit the wood frame soo much :smt044

New furniture is nearly done.   Going to be nice having a little elbow room while getting up to the bow, old console was so wide you couldn’t get up front without feeling like you’re gonna fall out. Just need to make a tackle box storage insert to go under the lean post. Waiting for a stretch with some increased temps so I can get busy with glass and paint.

I have a few wood projects to do on my 15ft klamath. What will you be using to preserve the wood ?

It’s going to be fiberglassed over.  The next steps are to use a filler to plug up all the gaps and apply a hot coat of vinylester resin over all the surfaces. Then I’ll be applying two layers of 1708 bi-axial  fiberglass cloth on the outside skins and one layer on the insides.  Then paint.

What are you building? For some stuff a hot coat of epoxy resin over the wood would probably suffice and last a while.

considering replacing original flat bench seating. 3/4 inch plywood. Wanted to try and keep the wood grain look or paint after sealing.

For the wood look, marine varnish may be the cheapest option.  Only issue ive seen with it is some yellowing and you’ll probably have to sand and refinish it every year.

Phil Heranen, speargun builder, has a clarified epoxy finish that won’t yellow, would probably work better but pricier.

If painting over it, just a couple coats of a marine grade epoxy resin would work.

For any of the options, be sure to really saturate the ends with whatever coating you use.  That’s where and delam due to water intrusion will start.

Not sure how it would look as I haven’t used it yet but https://www.rotdoctor.com/
makes a liquid that soaked into wood and then dries into an epoxy. We’re going to saturate or 5th wheel floors when we refloor the trailer in the near future.

Looks like a great product from the advertising.   Please let us know how it comes out.
