So I'm getting ready to head out on the yak for some dungees for my first time.  I'm curious what is the preferred method for getting them home?  Should I boil them as soon as I get to shore then put on ice?  Would they be O.K. in a bucket or ice chest for the drive from Bodega to Sacramento?
Any assistance or guidance would be appreciated!

I prefer to put them in the ice chest with a wet burlap back between them and the ice.  Once home just cook and clean or clean then cook.

I like to freeze water in some plastic containers, shallow food storage containers work great, and set those on top of the crabs in the cooler. Keeps them cool without soaking them in fresh water.

I prefer to use a 6 gallon bucket or a cooler with water from the beach with an aerator.  I got mine on amazon for like 6 bucks?

I've kept crab for many hours before dispatching them and they were lively and trying to take off fingers still.

without an aerator I would probably just use a wet burlap sack in a cooler.  I like to avoid any fresh water getting on the crabs even from condensation.  but I'm paranoid and have had crab spoil from freshwater condensation.

Either clean at the beach and put in ziploc bags and pack in ice, or leave live in a wet burlap sack if you want to cook them whole. The will stay alive for a day or more in a wet burlap sack, no buckets aerators or anything else fancy required.
