you  should all live in fear for I am signed up for elk and I will bring the largest
smelt up to 10in but no smaller than 8in I think 10 to 15 should do it :smt005

As for HMB I got the winning ling on the 2 drop he hit an 8 to 9 in smelt but don't forget I had to paddle thou 10 foot swells to get to him as I remember not Manny
guys turned right when they got out of the harbor that day.As for my brother and I we headed for some gps waypoints that I downloaded before I left house because I knew that the biggest fish would be caught in the mavericks area.

But don't forget I use 20# braided line not 40 or 50 what chance will a 30# fish
have of braking me off? real good I will say

now at HMB i used 20# mono and that was a small ling but he gave me hell
the lings at ELK are much bigger than HMB so ELK will be a test. I do plan to
use braided but only 20# hope I am right I want to go to 30# but what the
hell I will give the 20# a shot :smt004

Nseal,

Yes.  I use the book.  Been only rockcod fishing hard for maybe 5 yrs.  Before that it was only once in awhile.  Anyway, I bet most poeple don't have all the Regs. for Rockcod in thier heads.  It changes year to year and month to month.  Anyway, I think it was one of the kayak guides that did not know what he had a few days ago rockcod fishing.  And, he is older  than me.

Mainly did stripers every weekend with my Dad.  Lakes like Eagle Lake, Davis, Frenchman, ect.  Shad fishing.  All the lakes in the bay area.  Bridgeport, Topaz.  Know most of the Party Boats in the Area.
But, the best kick in the pants is "Long Range".

Hey Dustin, you may want to talk to InsaneDaune about the finer points of his HMB2007 win.

You may also want to talk to bsteves about his win at the RFA.   :smt003 Jenna's lings were all on send-down rockies.

I haven't read this whole mess, but I use live bait all of the time.  Making bait is a huge part of the ritual for me.  Watching my captain in PV with the cast net gave me a full woody :smt007 :smt007...he was a skilled master.  A perfect circle with a 12 foot net and 100s of mullet in one throw...awesome.

Actually, there may be a limit on how much live bait one person can have.  It is being talked about on Coastside right now.

Really guys,

If you think Fishing Regs are hard.  You should try Duck Hunting.  You have to Identify birds at a long way off.  Know if they are in season and what the limit is.  If it is a hen or drake and how many of those you can keep.  All doing this with 25 shells.  And, unlike us fisherman. We all get check on the way out of the refuge.

Sure, you can bury them.  But, you still need to you what you bury.

Hey Sean, I don't have a problem with bait either, just the transport of it (or any live fish) between bodies of water.   I often catch and use live bait but do so on the same trip.  The ocean regs on live bait are in fact pretty liberal... you just can't use tilapia.  Every other fish you catch as long as it was legally caught and possessed can be used as bait.  Want to catch a 21 inch chinook in season and use it as bait for lingcod, go right ahead assuming you're using barbless circle hooks.  From what I can tell, according to the regs, in the ocean there really isn't a distinction between bait fish and sport fish.

However, I still think that despite a lack of enforcement, reg 1.63 should prevent someone from moving bait (or other fish) between lakes, and between bays in the ocean, etc..  The counter to this argument from some has been to interpret it to mean you can't move bait from the "location" where caught, which is absurd, therefor the reg must be wrong.  The word "location" isn't in 1.63 and if you catch bait in San Francisco Bay, I see no reason you shouldn't feel free to fish with it in San Francisco Bay that day.

The problem with moving live fish from a water body like San Francisco Bay to another is that you aren't just moving the bait, you're moving everything else in the water (plankton, zooplankton, larvae, and pathogens) and everything in the bait like parasites.  San Francisco Bay is the most invaded estuary in the world and it is often the source of secondary introductions of invasive species up and down our coast.

Johnny Appleseed is soooo last century.  I use rockies for lings all of the time.  Paige spanked thelings drifting blues with Captain Ron last fall.
