Has ANY RF/Ling type derby EVER been won by live bait?

I seriously doubt it...and if it was it was by someone who sent a FRESH CAUGHT rockfish back down.

Sheesh..... :smt011

Hey Dustin, you may want to talk to InsaneDaune about the finer points of his HMB2007 win.  I think I remember seeing some pretty nice looking live bait involved.  He's not the self-proclaimed "Master Baiter" for nothing.

Erik,

I bet it you ask any Capt or dechand in the Bay Area.  What is a more sure way of catching.  They all would say "Live Bait".

That is why Halibut, Stripers and Rockcod are caught this way and why the boat can charge and extra $10 to go on a "Live Bait" Rockcod Trip.

Most DH's I've seen pick up a rod will sling iron.  On occasion I've seen them deadstick a blue or mac and pass it off to customers when they get a fish on.  They charge more money for a live bait potluck trip because they gotta purchase the bait dude.  At $40 bucks a scoop + tip it aint cheap...especially when you got +30 people on board.

I fish live bait a lot!  Have to admit, though, I feel more accomplishment when I catch an equivalent fish using something artificial, because it's harder to fool the fish and takes more technique.

Derby situations are different, if I want to win, I will use the best sure thing I know.  In past derbies, we used to be allowed to fish "anywhere we want" within a prescribed area (like 'the greater Monterey Bay area, including the North Coast of Santa Cruz')

This allowed us to head for the best spot we knew of for the bite.  Anyone who traveled to fish was taking a chance by losing valuable fishing time and trading that time for (hopefully) a better chance at a big fish.

The risk could pay off, like Chuck E's Pajaro flatty.

These days most derbies have opted for a common take off spot and all travel on the kayak only.  Builds better community and the Gran Prix starts are a fun and photogenic.

If live bait would give me an edge in a derby that I wanted to win, I would use it for sure, if I could find it somehow.  Now that we have the legality question answered, I will announce that live bait is definitely acceptable for the MBK tourney, whether purchased, caught that day, or transported to the event.  As long as it is within the DFG regs it is OK with me.

I heard Duane is currently experimenting on using the endangered yellow-bellied-salamander that is trained to swim to the nearest structure and then it tends to swim erratically and secretes a scent similar to an anchovy when it encounters a big toothy predator  :smt002

Also, I keep a Ocean Sport Fishing Regulations with me in my PFD chest pocket in a plastic baggie.  Just helps you identify what you just caught.  If it is legal, maybe it has a size limit or limit on the numbers you can keep.
Just might help in knowing what a Bocaccio or Kelp Bass looks like.

Hmmm, he's been fishing for 45 years and still needs an ID book? WTF?
