Wondering what your thoughts are..  i'm not in a position to buy a kayak, so i'd be renting... is it problematic if there aren't any holders? I have a 2-rod stamp, but i assume trolling 2 rods would be unlikely, especially with a paddle..  appreciate any input here

Nothing wrong with renting. Most rental places will having fishing kayaks available for you. I have fished on many kayaks and in the beginning none had rod holders. Just make sure they are somehow clipped to the kayak so you don't lose them overboard. Trolling with any weight on can be difficult without a rod holder but not impossible. If trolling light in a lake I have propped it under my legs and have done it behind the seat(Harder to get to if there is a bite.) There is no one true way to do things and the best thing to do is just get out there and try what works best for you.
Get out there and Fish!

IMO & IME, you don’t NEED a rod holder to fish or even troll in many circumstances. Even extended trolling with a Deep Six planer, holding a fishing pole with the under one leg, over the other leg method works fine.

You’ll have to find the spot and angle that works for you and allows comfortable, unimpeded paddling, but it’s a fairly easy task.

I learned it from LoletaEric, check out his YT videos, you’ll see what I am describing.

It's my go to technique and I have mutiple rod holders in front and back of me.  always seem to defer to the old tried and true.  Being on your legs (over and under) you feel hits that might be missed if it's sitting in a holder.  Also a cinch to adjust your scope, drag etc and to  check you're staying close to the bottom.

This... or put some pool noodle on your rod to give you that extra 2 seconds to grab it before you sacrifice it to the deep.  I made a donation to Lake Beryessa on one of my first kayak fishing attempts because I figured I'd be quick enough to grab the rod if I accidentally let it go.  Nope...  :smt003

Make sure you know how to self rescue before you start adding fishing equipment into the mix.

A pool noodle or leash on your fishing rod won't amount to much if you can't get back on your kayak when not if you flip.

I found it damn near impossible to troll one rod using a rented kayak, especially if they give you a sit-inside kayak. I've also lost a rod by keeping the rod under my leg while paddling. In hindsight I should've attached a pool noodle around the rod.

Depends on what kind of fishing your planing on doing, but I'll guess that since you said second-rod stamp, you mean trolling in freshwater lakes?  Are you looking for ways to secure your gear, or ways to troll, or both perhaps?

I'm a big fan of the trolling/drifting under the leg method as well.  But two rods would be difficult, and possibly easy to loose one while you are dealing with a fish on the other.

However for trolling, I normally use rod holders that I mounted on the crate behind me.  In fact, I only troll with these, as with my Hobie and my X-Factor, they only have the vertical rod holders that I basically only use to stash a rod, not troll with.

I've been trying to finish up building a new crate, but here is a picture of my old one for an example:

Third this.  You can put your rods under your thigh when you are paddling.  Also, follow the advice of attaching noodle pool to your rods, it hurts when u lose them.  Trust me on this.

This was the first thing I thought of for the question.  That or one of those Plano boxes with the rod holders attached to it.

thanks for your inputs...  all very helpful.  I was thinking that if I wanted to take a long paddle across a lake to a bass cove, I'd troll it...

2019 was my year back into fishing after a 20-30 year break..  I've spent the year fishing salt water, but my uncle has a bass boat and he's itching to get me out with him this year.  we went to berryessa last month and froze.

I'm mostly familiar fishing carolina rig plastics and spinnerbaits for bass, and carolina rig powerbait / salmon eggs (do people even use that anymore, LOL) for trout.
