Hey all, I'm Giles. Pretty novice fisherman, located in Milpitas. I've got a 2018 Predator PDL, which I got to support my new habit between boat trips with buddies. Salt is my preference, and I'd be super open to anyone who wants to go out of Santa Cruz, Half Moon Bay, Monterey, or in the bay who also wants to coach. Looking forward to hopefully getting to know some good people and catching some fish!

Also new to forums in general, so if I'm weirdly replying to myself or something stupid, let me know. I'm using a phone for this, and it's not intuitive. Do you guys use an app or full computer for this most of the time?

I'm planning to go out this Saturday out of Moss Landing for sand dabs or sole. My buddy says out the harbor, go right and shoot for 80ish feet...good advice?

Welcome to NCKA Giles  :smt006. Haven't kayak fishing from ML yet but from what I read that is about the general area for Dabs.

Welcome Giles.

I'm still on my first year Kayak Fishing, but I'm down to get out there with you, just hit me up, I can usually fish Sundays and Mondays.  Winter seems a little sparse in the salt, but there's still dinos and dabs to pick up.

I'm planning to go out this Saturday out of Moss Landing ...

You want to pay close attention to tides at ML. There is a lot of water in Elkhorn Slough so the current thru the harbor entrance can be strong—in some cases, stronger than you can paddle (or pedal) against. If I’m reading the tide table correctly, there is a 5.4’ high tide at 4:46am followed by a 0.8’ low tide at 11:51am. That 4.6’ drop is not huge but will likely make for a noticeable outgoing current. So if you go out in the morning, you probably don’t want to try coming back in until afternoon. Also, when the current is strong, it can get pretty rough going thru the jaws of the harbor, so you want to be especially cautious there.

You might want to consider going somewhere else if you’re new to kayak fishing. Santa Cruz and MBK in Monterey are both better options, IMHO.

Are you pondering what I’m pondering?

Thank you for the advice. I'm planning on a 7-1 trip, so seems like a good time. If I get there and it looks rough, I'll try MBK...not out to prove anything stupid!
