Hooked up with Abking for a long distance paddle out to the salmon grounds. We were 2 yaks in a sea of power boaters. As soon as we caught up to the fleet Eric hooked into a Chinook Right away. He landed it perfectly, giving it the ol wood shampoo. It got me excited and sure I was next but it wasn't to be. We spent the next few hours chasing massive bait balls before heading in. Came into a school of Jelly fish off pilot rock. Looked like a bad place for a capsize. As always I had a great day on the water if not catching than learning and honing for the next adventure. Congrats to ABKING in what is probably the first kayak boated Chinook in norther Humboldt since Indian days.

That's the hard part, Don.  You never know when you'll have good enough conditions and a bite happening - especially the conditions.  There have been a fair number of NCKA'ers that have gotten in touch when they're going through town, and Hawk and I try to hookup or at least give them the best assessment we can of the local scene.  So get in touch if you're coming this way.

I really am a bit sorry to dredge up a 3 day old post when it basically glorifies me ( :smt001), but I've got to say that Hawk's photo work is stellar!  Those salmon fight shots are magazine-worthy!  I love the one with the PB audience.  Thanks, Hawk.   :smt001

Nice fish!  I've never seen Trinidad that smooth, you guys scored!  How were the PB's doing?

I'll be over for a family camp trip in about a month, hopefully the fish will still be around...sounds like i better get some paddling practice in.

tight lines,
ben

The PB's seem to be getting it done with regularity in Trinidad lately, Ben, but it's been long runs and sometimes long days for limits from what I've heard.  With how fleeting the bite is in each port this season so far it's really a crapshoot whether they'll be biting when you come over, but we'll give it a try!  Get in touch when you're coming.

Sounds good Eric.  I've been on google earth, trying to find a new launch site.  I always do the harbor thing and paddle around the point, but last time I was over some guy was telling me of his buddy who puts in at Patricks Point and rides the current down to the harbor.  The only beach access I know is the flight of a few hundred stairs down the cliff, do you know of anything different?  Also, how's the surf launch/landing at Moonstone?  Typically seems do-able, but I've seen it turn hair-ball in a hurry.

I agree! I think with the photos and the awesome writers we have here we could drum up a beauty of a free magazine. If it was released a few times a year and if sponsors could pay for the printing I think we may have something here... NCKA the magazine?? :smt112

Sorry, Sean, but the BlueX is gonna blow mango out of the water!   :smt003

Ben:  Hawk and I have an active dialogue going on about launching at Patrick's - the stairs down to Palmer Point would have to be it.  It'll be brutal hauling all the crap down the stairs, but riding a 5-10 knot north wind back down to the harbor would be a fun day, and I think the lingzilla chances around Patrick's Point and within a mile or two south will be good.  We could stop and pick up a few nice helmets too - I've got plenty of farmers growing along the coast there.   :smt001

Look at the Mendo Boys, They rappell off sheer cliffs to get to the fishing grounds. Let's not be pansies about little ol thing like elevation. I say we one up em and drop in with a tactical parachute jump.

Looks like Portofino with some good salmon fishing thrown in to make it complete

Abking if you see a funny looking old guy with a beard trolling around in a sailboat it could be my uncle Dan
