Set the lures at least 100ft back.

Check the lures action based on the speed you're going beside the kayak.  It doesn't take much speed, 1 to 3mph depends on the lure though which is why you need to check.

Try turning a bit rather than straight lines.

Scent may help, who knows, i use it though.

Get a 2 rod stamp. Try different depths. Top line one, run the other one deeper.Try different lures, colors.until you find something that they like. It seems,at least at barryessa.this year. They want something different every trip.

Just keep trying and something will work. This is why it’s called fishing and not catching. Just keep grinding and never give up!

Top lineing is not using any weight. I forgot to tell you to use a beadchain trolling swivel.

I gave it a go a couple of days ago at Quarry Lakes.  It was my first time trout trolling from a kayak.  I didn't catch anything nor did I get a bit but damn it was relaxing; no ocean launch/landing to worry about, the tackle was simple, and it was flat, calm, and pretty warm.  No fish though.

To get my lures down to some depth,(I was using an assortment of 3-4 inch Rapalas, Kastmasters, and Rooster Tails) I placed a 1/4 oz - 1/2 oz tungsten weight and bead 18 inches in front of the lure.  I had no idea what I was doing.  But I saw several fish in schools on the FF.

I may try to go again next week given my kayak is nice and clean. :)

Amador has a lot of big trout and I have had a lot of luck there! It's privately owned and they have their own strain of trout that get really big! I dont use down riggers there and just top line it back about 50-80 feet. small flasher with 15"-18" leader to the lure. if the water murkey they bite is a little slow. Good luck!

Also, if your in a stocker lake, dont be afraid to soak some powerbait instead of trolling to produce some fish.  They love that stuff  :smt044   I also like to slowwwwwwww troll a nightcrawler on a #6 bait holder, with a splitshot about 3ft above it.  Or just dangle it midwater, and see how many things you can catch.  Sara recently out fished me catching Crappie, Bluegill, and Bass to my skunk this way  :smt044

search spilt milt on you tube...most of his stuff has to do with Kokanee fishing but the rig he runs is a pretty slick set up.  I use one downrigger and one set up the way he does.
