Has anyone fished or caught a tuna via kayak (NCKA)?  Is it possible here in Nor Cal?
Thinking it would be a good time or ride.

Tuna in the Bay Area is unlikely from kayak due to the distance required to find them. This past season they were caught going out from Bodega, Fort Bragg, and further north. Most boats went out 30-40 miles. Another issue is that our local tuna, the albacore, is caught on a fast troll.

A few blue fin were caught off of Monterey from power boats but they are not common. Your best bet is to go out with a guide, or on a mother ship in the San Diego Area.

Checkout RoKkiT KiT on YouTube. He catches tuna, marlin, and other big fish from kayak out of Australia.

Thank you. I didn't realize they were that far out.

I hear rumors during the El Nino weather patterns that Marlin come in close for boater to catch in the area, would that be the same for Tuna? Not that we will have such a pattern any time soon with the rain we are getting.

NCKA is a great place not only to develop expertise as a kayak angler, but also to get a more general feel for fishing in Northern California.

I'd reccomend to use the search function on the forum.  Look up "tuna".  Now, look up "albacore."  Then, try "Marlin."  Yu can see if when and where those kind of fish are caught by NCKA's.

Now, look up "sturgeon, lingcod, halibut, white sea bass, stripers, rockfish and salmon"

Those are the common prey in our (salt) waters.

I should have caught one last year, but I had already committed to boat trip before I was told that they were so close in the Cove.  The day I was out on the boat trip out of Eureka fishing for albacore, a kayaker in Shelter Cove caught an albacore.  Its doable when they get pushed in within 10 miles.  All this trolling 6-7kts is nonsense.  You can put a swimbait or dead choice out and just drift and catch one.  It helps to have a bunch of frozen choices to toss as chum to bring em in.  I have caught albacore this way from a boat.

So yes, tuna can be caught from a kayak in NorCal, but it is very rare, but still on mybucket list.

I was at the cove the day after that one was caught. The Albie's were showing up 7 to 8 mi out. We almost made the trek. Lack of confidence as a cove first timer swayed the decision to stay close

There have been a couple yellowtail and 1 bluefin tuna caught by kayakers in Monterey/Carmel over the past few years. That would be a nice fish to accidentally catch haha!

Besides Tuna, do you have a secondary target fish? :smt006
