Tote, just for you I took it a step closer.
When I got passed Jaws I dropped at about the green can. I immediately pulled up a small 22 1/2" Ling cod that got me thinking that the epic day was on... Yes the whales we're very close to the Jetty very majestic, beautiful and BIG.....
As I paddled I watched in awe as one of these big guys lined itself directly infront of me at about 50 yards away. Just as this whale appeared the second time perfectly ahead of me  my rod started to tap and I had a fish on. However the whale with the barnacle tail was coming at me fast then the thought occurred," it doesn't see me".
I am 30 something pulls down and my rod starts to get tapped but I am concerned with the Whale that is now very close with it's hump back about 20 yards away and I am in it's direct path. It submerges, I start paddling in unknown directions when I see the whale go right (directly) below me and I fill my Kayak lift from the displacement of water. GULP!
At this point my Kayak turns when my line gets caught up in the whale and I am quickly pointed in the opposite direction and my bow is making a cut right through the water with me in it.This huge temptation of throwing the rod at the beast comes over me followed by cut the line screaming in my head but at this point I hold on more for balance than anything else as my reel sings loudly with line exiting faster then I can think (which isn't saying much at this point), my Kayak acting like a Lasha Apso smelling a great Danes ass. Bad F*&^ing dog. Bad!
About this time my line goes slack, I take a very deep breath when I see the whale surface this time to my left and guess what I see!? My line attached to the whales opposite side and an eye ball staring in my direction. The whale at this time is emitting this very loud screech that kind of makes me think that he,it, is really pissed off. It submerges again I am again pulled in that direction and I start to pull on the line like one would on a snag hoping that it will break off.
To my relief it does and I start to reel in so fast that I only hope that I can get in line and get the hell out the area FAST. I must admit that I quickly learned how to use my Avet reel very quickly and that it performed very nicely giving me the correct setting that I needed during this whole harrowing, epic, scary, terrifying ordeal. I am so glad I resisted throwing it in when I first became entangled with the whale.
I know, I know only Frankfishing could get himself into this situation but guys what other way to experience life then on life's terms.
I forgot to mention that a small shark had hooked itself and was brought up with my rig intact. Thank you GOD.....

Truly yours a grateful and thankfully dry/alive Frankfishing.

PS. I want to thank the crew,Tom,John,Eric and Kevin for keeping the ribbing down to the minimum :)

Oh Dang!   :smt044   :smt005

Frank, only you could wind up in a pickle like that.  That is one of the best stories I've heard in a long time.  Doing it Nantucket style.

We might have to start a new category in the AOTY board... how do you get a good measurement on a whale anyway?

Awesome!

I think that Sturg fishing will not get me as pumped as this one did. And your right EK the thought of now what went through my head when I first hooked up to this animal.

frankfishing,

its time to contact the manufacturer of your fishing line!  Think about it, "Stren, whaling strength" or "screw spider wire, think Maxima Whale wire."

you could be a star!

I overheard this while out there:

gTO:  "So frank, how much does it cost each time the coast guard rescues you?"

frank: "Not that much, I have a season pass".

Sweet report.  I wish I was there.  No need to be frightened of whales Frank.  The worst they will do is dump you in the water and you already know how to handle that.  :smt003

That whale of a story there Frank.
