Another rescue at HMB today (Sunday 11/10)

There was a yak with a lot of wet gear piled on it next to a harbormaster truck so we stopped in at the office to ask about it

The harbormaster folks seem to think this will be a regular thing

For anyone that is new to kayaking and in need of self practice rescues, visit the Camden Community Center on Tuesdays!

There are experienced people around and you can have them spot you if you're hesitant. DO NOT BE AFRAID TO ASK FOR HELP, they are all pretty chill people willing to help each other out.

Only 10 bucks, but it can save your life! Heated pools with lights and lifeguards around, who can ask for more? Wish I knew of this before I dove into shoreline lake for my first practice rescue. Nasty.

11/24 saw two separate incidents of kayaks flipping at rockaway. Surf was listed as 5-7 get but looked more like 5-12'. 3 kayaks were coming in total, only 1 made it without eating it. Surfers to the rescue, literally paddled people in... Kayaks were left to drift but eventually washed up on shore. Really scary situation - 1 guy wasn't wearing a wetsuit.

Some people lack an understanding and respect for the Ocean.

This kayak fishing thing is great. Bet I can get a ton of crabs that way. Got me a used kayak, a paddle and a bunch of crab traps. This is going to be easy.

You said it, Riverman.
As the great Mooch was fond of saying "we are kayakers first, fishermen second". I think many times folks get into this thing with FISH on the brain, and don't treat it as an immersion activity that can get strenuous quickly.

The #1 thing I tell every beginner that wants in on this activity is "take an intro class". Then when they ask about beach launches I say "take a surf zone class".

Boy, and Rockaway is no joke! Sunday was a BIG day.

I occasionally read this old post to remind myself of how things can go wrong and come out OK.

This past Sunday, my family was at Muir Beach enjoying the weather and tried surf fishing a little.  Waves were up, easily 3-7ft and there were surfers out there.  The waves and swells were only getting bigger.

As we were leaving, two kayakers with crab traps were heading out.  An older gentleman with a full wetsuit but no life jacket, and a younger guy with a short sleeve and shorts but had a life vest.  No radios from what I could see, and no other safety gear.  I approached them and said "You're brave to be going out in these conditions."  He smiled and started dragging their gear towards the water.  Part of me wanted to stay and watch in case they needed help but I had young kids with me and had to leave.

Hope they made it without incident.  Or even better, they decided it wasn't safe to go out.

Sometimes, you just have to let people learn their own way.

Is a running thread really necessary? I've been at this issue for well over a 7 years and there is enough information on the web, my blog/website, this forum, seminars, public service announcements, warning signs...etc...

At some point people are going to sleep in the bed they made. We can take a horse to water but can't make a person drink it. I know the staff at CCK talks to people about safety, dressing for immersion, radio etc... before even selling a kayak to them. They do their due diligence getting people educated.

NCKA folks are always rescuing people and doing the right thing. That's as much as i'm willing to go. To each their own. That also means taking responsibility for your own actions.

A running thread might be a very good thing.  There are a lot of posts here - and more (per capita) on NWKA - where all we see are fish porn pictures.  I can understand, without forgiving, people who see those photos and run to Wal-Mart for a kayak so they can get in on the action, without understanding anything about the hazards involved or the minimal requirements for personal safety, and without the least bit of common sense.

I think it's not a bad idea to put these tales in one place in the hope those folks will read them.

A running thread is not necessary. The current thread is the appropriate place. Why diffuse the issue of safety?

I kind of agree with Hojo.  But, I do not want to offend the great and powerful Blue Kayak. (No sarcasm)

My concern is, with a running thread, members will eventually "pass it over." I have a tendency to do that when a thread gets too long.......And we'll never have a shortage of mishaps to report I'm afraid.Every time someone replies it could be a comment, or it could be a report.

I think Fishing Kayak rescues are such an important and critical topic that each rescue (read:Fuckup) might best be considered individually.  We have a devoted forum Safety First that serves a runing repository.

What say you, Blue?

Bushy

ps- I don't really like the running halibut/salmon threads either.  I'd rather see individual posts. but those topics don't feel as important to me as Safety.  You won't die if you don't catch a halibut.  You could die if you ignore kayak fishing safety.

Bushy makes a good point.  I belong to a fly-fishing forum with a fly-tying section that was once all that I bothered to read - it was a great resource - until someone started a thread about recently tied flies that's now 816 pages long - and growing.  It's worthless if one wants to find a particular fly pattern - to me anyway.

I think a rescued kayakers thread is a good idea, but these things can - and do - get out of hand, and their value rapidly diminishes.

Oh, no!  Tinker is fence-sitting?  Stop the presses!

I think each rescue should be individual as they are unique in their own way. We all know that each rescue is not textbook. That way we can pick up the differences and store them in our memories for future use (not that I want to do that, but we know it will happen). Stay Safe
