Hi All  My name is Bert and I am new to Kayaking... Bought a Tamarak kayak over the summer.  I've gone out on it 2 times at New Hogan Lake over the summer.  I plan to use it Nov8-10 do drop a crab trap and crab snaring in Tomales Bay, over by Lawsons Landing for some Dungeness Crabs...

Being new to this I hope to get some info on what I should be doing/have to keep safe and mostly dry. So far I have a PFD, VHF radio, Striker4 (still need to install and mount) and waders (still need to get some shoes). Crab trap with 100ft lead rope and buoy (still need to write my GOID onto it). I have also installed an anchor trolley system onto it with a quick-release.

Thanks all,
Bert

Get a wetsuit,. Don't use waders.  If you flip (and tomales can get nasty quickly) your going to have a very hard time getting back in kayak.  Don't go alone always buddy up. Just my 2 cents.

Thanks for the input. I’ll do my best to get a wetsuit. Anyone want to buddy up with me next weekend? I don’t know the waters out in Tomales bay at all. But looking at the depth charts it doesn’t seem very deep around Lawson landing. Or am I reading all that wrong?

The shallow water is just as cold and tends to be tougher in tomales bay.  You can get into serious trouble out there.  Be careful. You might consider doran park asits a little calmer and populous. If you go alone.

Welcome bert!
I also recommend a wetsuit instead of waders. Can't imagine that being very flexible in a kayak anyways.

Welcome, Bert.  :smt006
:smt006 back at you @Hojoman. I lived in Fremont from 1998-2016. That is till my rent was going to raised by almost $1000... Pushed me out of Fremont.  It was great living there. Wish I had done some fishing while I living there. I missed out on a lot being so close to the bay and Lake Elizabeth and Quarry Lakes.

In the Ocean wetsuit all the way. Waders are very dangerous for kayaking. Welcome to the group!
Get out there and Fish!
