It seems like it's been a while since anyone posted on this topic, and I am open to some advice on paddling Alviso.  I was looking to fish for stripers and sharks while getting some exercise.  I have been studying the tide tables and wind forecasts, and was wondering if anyone had any specific shards of wisdom to dispense.  Is it worth it?  Fun paddle?  I assume lots of birds, interesting area.  I am going to try it either way, but would like to know what I am getting into.

thanks

Depends how far you Going, but understanding tides and wind there is Paramount to your safety. It's a sketchy place if you get caught on the wrong side if the tides.

I’ve never been, but are you planning on launching at Alviso marina county park? If so and you’re looking for stripers I would pop onto google earth and look at some satellite shots. Stripers love moving water and will stack up where water flows off the flats into the channel waiting for food to be washed to them.

It is a fun trek to head to the bay but I have never fished it.

I stopped by the launch on Sunday.  Talked to a few boaters. They were skunked or undersized. Looked to be a nice launch. No fees! I need to check wind and Tides for this weekend.  Has anyone gone out lately?

^^^^ This times a thousand.  The tides could be really really strong going in/out.  Plus, you are going in & out of a pretty narrow boat channel (albeit relatively).  I would google map it, measure distances, and think about what happened if u have to make emergency landing somewhere.  My opinion is that this is the one place where u dont want to skimp on safety equipment.  The sturgeon fishing is excellent tho ....

I live just a few minutes from there, and have never even thought about trying to launch/fish there. Seems kinda murky; how's the fish quality for eating, or is this a catch and release place? If you want a newbie companion for a trip here, I'm up for it.

We launched out of Alviso Boat Ramp with our Revo 13s. First time we did it against an incoming tide with wind. Made it half way.

Second time we made it to the powerlines with an outgoing tide and no wind. I'd say its safe overall just watch those tides and time them right. A safety flag would be nice.

Thanks for the responses.  Yes, flag for sure. Saw a couple boaters not obeying the 5 mph all the way in. Thinking San Rafael will be better this weekend.
