Checking to see if there is any interest in having a surf zone class specifically for kayak fishers. I have had interest expressed in having a peddle drive in place class by group members but not sure if anyone would be willing to teach it. Typically they want your kayak stripped down bare without any thing extra to get in the way. If enough people want to do a drive in place class I will see if I can find someone.

The three listed locations are where surf zone classes are normally taught. Once a class date is set it will be dependent on the surf conditions for the day, and can be canceled if the weather is unfavorable.

UPDATE:

It looks like there is enough interest to have a full day class in the North Bay Area, most likely Bolinas in January or February. Bolinas is a great place because you have the lagoon area for some basic skills learning, and then we can paddle over to the surf area.

Following is a response from Sou Saephan the program director for CCK. I have attended three kayak classes taught by Sou, and can highly recommend him. He is also a member of NCKA, and fishes from a Hobie.

Hello Mark,

This is a great idea. I would love to run a class but before we do that I like people in the class to learn how to paddle properly. Especially..Forward, Reverse, Sweep, Rudder, & Bracing. If people are bringing their own gear (Hobie Pedal Drive might be a challenge, but I think we can work with it).

I like to find a day with good waves, Under 3' preferred. Bolinas & HMB are two good places to learn. Especially Bolinas as we don't have to paddle far.

Schedule: 1st 1/2 of the day is learning the proper strokes and 2nd 1/2 is learning surf how to work the surf zone. It'll be a long day. If everyone uses their own gear I think I think $109/person is minimum w/ full class.

Hi Mark

Thank you for coordinating Surf Zone Class?
As a snowboard instructor, I know the most efficient way to learn is to take a lesson from a professional instructor.

I think Hobie's new kickup fin might make surf landing slightly easier.
When I took my yellowtail guide trip, the guide brought PA-14 with kickup fin for me to use.
As we are getting ready to surf land at La Jolla, my guide who works for Hobie told me to follow a wave and pedal has as I can without worrying about potentially damaging the fin.

I'd be super interested in taking a surf zone class with other NCKA'ers that are interested.

No opinion on the drive in place class. Would rather practice in the surf zone in a bare kayak anyways. Getting to practice in my own kayak with professional guidance would be super helpful.

We teach Surf Zone classes here at MBK in Monterey. I myself am a surf zone instructor and am willing to teach a class for NCKA for free. If we can get enough people interested let me know and I will set it up. This time of year I teach a lot of surf zone classes with the bigger swells coming through. I can provide kayaks as well but not pdl drives. Will also supply the helmets and such

Adam, that would be great if you can teach a class. Twelve people participated in the poll so far. 8 of them preferred taking the class south at HMB, so Monterey would most likely have some interest. I think you should go ahead and schedule a class. How many participants can you take?

I have four interested in a North Coast class so I will try and schedule one at Doran, or Bolinas. Unfortunately it will not be free unless someone else steps forward.

That's a very generous offer Adam. I go to Monterey every few weekends these days and am interested in taking a surf class.

I would sign up for the north coast class and happily pay for it since I live up here. Let me know when that might occur!

Count me in, Adam.
Prefer Saturday.
Going Fishing?

Wind from the east, bite the least.
Wind from the north, further off.
Wind from the west, bite the
