Heard about that too....but I never made it out on the pier....just too many stories about "combat fishing"....not my cup of tea  :smt011 I still visit this pier regularly - not to fish - but just to see what's bitting. Back in my High School days (Oceana High class of 87) my buddies and I spent many nights catching and releasing sharks till sun rise.......yup, I was a pier rat  :smt002 I'm so glad I found out about "kayak fishing"  :smt003

Maybe squid ate the large schools of salmon?

Are squid fast enough to catch salmon?

One is not fast but they travel in big groups and will attack anything once they are in a feeding frenzy.  They even eat each other (big time cannibals) so NO fish is safe when they are feeding.  Only a bigger school of fish like the Tunas (Yellowfin/Bluefin) can battle with a big group of squid.  I have fished for these Squid and by the time I get it up to the boat (after reeling in 1000ft of line) all I end up with is part of the squid.

Thanks for a great thread.  It made my day to think of the old days, when fishing was unreal, compared to today.

Don't squid rise from the deep at night? What are the nocturnal habits of salmon? In low light I have seen trout that just suspend like they are asleep. If a school of squid was to encounter a school of salmon that was 'asleep'....lights out. School gone.

Sounds like someone I know too... could it be, Brian "Bluejeans"...

That was an outstanding year... what a blood bath. Seasons like that just don't come around too often. Salmon at Moss... salmon at LM... salmon all over the place. All you guys that took up yak fishing after that year truely missed out... big time. Hopefully, the run will come back in all it's glory...

I hit that 96/97 Red Tide from the Beach,  throwing "Rusty" with a barbless hook, I lost 3 Good fish in the

Surf,  did not feel bad about it,, Fish and Game was out there in 2 Zodiacs, making beach landings and checking people and PB's in the Area...

Funny thing though,  A Big Hawian came over to me and says,

" Hey Bra,  Whats sa Matter with You, Losing those fish??!!! "

I show him my Kroc with a single Barbless Hook,

He shows me the same Lure with a Treble Hook on it Bigger than the Lure..

   "SSHHIITTT BRa!!!!"

I Guess I'm Just One Dumb Hali who don't know how to fish Linda Mar, :smt003............Danglin

That's too funny  :smt044 Almost forgot about that  :smt003

The (true) story goes....Days before our Mother Ship trip to San Clemente Island, Brian G. decided that it would be "cool" just to launch out of La Jolla wearing "blue jeans".....well, after he froze his ass off....he paddled back and found out it wasn't such a great idea after all  :smt011

Brian is a very entertaining fella....it must be a Lodi thing  :smt003

A few years back, he launched out of Santa Cruz wearing a his wetsuit, white tennis shoes and a red sweater....he looked like he was on his way to a Jenny Craig aerobics class  :smt005

Yes 04 was nice. one week i fished 6 out of 7 days and got my limit everytime no matter what time i fished. I did not even bother to get up early. i live in Linda mar and have fished there 30 years 9 from kayak 10+ from my boat and 10 from the land pier. 04 was great but probably not the best year. There seems to be a 4 or 5 year cycle for great years so 08 might be one of those years. What i am worried about is the rock fish. Its seems Linda mar has less and less each year. I think it such a easy launch we are fishing them out do to there SLOW reproductive rate. There was a day when i saw another kayak out there it was surprising. PLEASE Know what you are catching and let a few go to fight another day.

04 was the year for Salmon in Linda Mar.  It was wide open for a while, beginning right around July 4th.  My biggest was a healthy 15 pounder.

Great times.

To defend myself I wasn't cold on the water. It was when I rolled coming in.

Again in my defense, I forgot my booties and I didn't want to freeze my feet off.  :smt013

I think '04 was the year my buddy and I caught and released 42 lings from the Doran jetty over a three day period in March. 42 lings for two people in a total of eight hours of fishing (4 hours Sunday, 2 hours after work on Monday & Tuesday) from shore!!

And I believe '03 was the year that Bodega Harbor was just absolutely infested with halibut. One of the main reasons I bought my yak...but it hasn't been that way since.

In Loving Memory of Mooch, Eelmaster, Shicken, and Cabeza De Martillo

I started kayak fishing to get away from most of you...

Wow, this thread has really taken off...I'm looking out my window (i live on a hill in SF with an ocean view) and I'm seeing a few boats drifting off the Cliff House. I'm wondering if stripers or halibut are showing up there...in '03, my brother and a friend launched from the Cliff House when the fleet was working right off the beach, and they jigged up a 40" halibut. Sorry to change the subject from '04 to '03...2003 really wasn't that great a year as I remember it.
May the fish be mighty and the seas be meek...
