Hey yall,

I'm going to Cabo for a week next June.  I want to get on a few fishing boats and get into some tropicals.  Anyone ever chartered down there? Any tips?  Long ways away, but I'm trying to plan it out well.

Thanks!

I was there in June this year.  I've chartered through https://www.piscessportfishing.com for the past couple decades.  For 3-4 people, their "Standard Cruisers", any of the workhorse 31' Bertrams, are the best bang for your buck IMO.

Thanks!  The booking system seems to be down now. Will look later.  How was the fishing in June?

No need to pre-book a trip down there. I was just there last Labor Day weekend. There are literally a hundred boats down there. I just walked the harbor and was approached by a few guys. Bargain with them. I eventually booked with this guy (pic of his card below). I bargained with him. $300 for a nice 28’ boat with a head and shade! He represents quite a few private skippers for a good price.
No need to cover the overhead of an actual storefront..I was on the Maybe Tuna Boat. Caught 3 nice size mahi and some skipjack

I figured that was the case, but I do like at least getting some info first.  Thanks for the dope!

While down there, try eating at Tacos Guss. Best al pastor on the planet. Its walking distance from the harbor. Good luck on whatever boat you choose..

Gracias.

I'm going for a friend's 50th, and they got a big house so my room is covered.  Literally going to fish, eat, drink, repeat.

I used RedRum Sportfishing before and very happy with them.  It was approximately 10 years ago we caught many striped marlins.

True Dat!

Bushy’s Pole’s (They are one in the same so I get them confused) and 123’s suggestions are solid leads. I would never go to the Marina and get a boat from some dude on the dock. Most of those guys work on commissions and really aren’t associated with the boats.

Maybe Spring’s suggestion is a good one but couldn’t confirm.

I know a good captain that owns a couple boats down there but he’s a bigger jerk than me  :smt001

My focus lately has been spearfishing down there so different captains, boats, areas etc......
Do your homework and good luck.

I’ve been going down there for several weeks a year for the past 30 years. If you want any additional information on anything Baja Sur related feel free to PM me.

You may be right. But speaking from my experience, it worked out well. Paying for one’s small commission as opposed to overhead of paying a storefront, employess...well, we are all adults and free to make our own decisions. Everything was legit, btw. Got the necessary licenses, boat was safe and when I go back (some time early next year), definitely hitting up the same guy. He set me up with an experience I’ll never forget. Good luck with whatever you choose.
Still gotta go to Tacos Guss though..😬

That’s great that it worked out for you and hopefully it’s someone you can rely on for many years to come.
These store fronts you speak of also hire non employees to solicit fishing trips on the marina, in town, the beach and the airport. So unless you know exactly who you are dealing with then you might be paying for these store front cost anyway.

Many of these same middle men also offer various activities, timeshare, prostitutes and drugs.

It’s all about the dollar and many only care about their commission and not necessarily your success.

That is why it’s important to do your homework because they might not be as lucky as you.

How was the fishing in June?

June can be hit/miss IMO, as it is the transition between seasons.  But we got 2 striped marlin.

We only went in June as that was the only free period that me and my boys had that we could all make.
